Hi everyone! I have a '94 ranger, std cab, 3.0, 5 speed, rwd. I'm just curious of what performance issues, if any, is caused by a bad VSS? I understand that it is apart of the ABS system but, would it effect anything like mileage or engine performance? Thanks.

VSS is used by computer and cruise control, it is with speedometer cable on transmission tail shaft(2WD)

ABS sensor is on the rear axle, it was used on Rangers as speed sensor from 1998 to 2000, but not in 1994

I doubt VSS would effect MPG with manual trans

The ABS sensor is what I meant and thanks for the input. I do know that my brake and abs light is constantly on. I had to shut her down not to long ago to avoid hitting a deer and the rear brakes locked up and slid me sideways. I haven't looked into it yet, do to the unpredictable weather here. Don't know if I just need to replace the sensor or if there is some other mechanical issue going on.

Check if brake lights work, blown brake light fuse will cause ABS and dash Brake light to come on.

Also check brake Master cylinder for Fluid Level sensor, if it has one pull off connector and make sure it is clean and dry inside, and of course, make sure fluid level is OK, lol.

And yes it could be ABS sensor has failed, it is a Variable Reluctance(VR) sensor, so it generates its own AC Voltage as Tone Wheel teeth pass by it, hard to test if it is working and not all that expensive to replace, I think the Dorman sensor is under $20
