so ive got an 80 gig hard drive in my computer. i had a 2nd drive that was 160 gig sata drive. but my sata clip broke off the drive so its junk.

ive got this older dell with an 120 gig drive in it. i gave it to my stepfather he looked at to much bad stuff and just about the entire drive is bad. last time i ran avg on it it came up with like 230 virus.

im pretty sure i know the answer to this but im going to ask any ways. if i plug that drive into my computer to store movies on if i just happen to need to take them back off that drive and put them on another. could a virus potentually attach itself to the movie file and get onto the computer i hook the drive up to?

or is there possibly a site online that i can store my movie files on?

my main drive is 80 gigs. and its got 1 free.

just hooking up the drive and saving files to it will not infect files stored on the 120gb drive, as its not the boot drive thus not loading viruses at startup. just format the drive and you'll be good to go. how bad is the 160gb hard drive broken, if you know how to solder, you may be able to fix it.

Yeah, if you've got an old PC kicking around you could insert the HD and then format the drive...that way you will have no question as to whether any virus becomes active on your working PC...once the drive is formatted there won't be a problem with the virus...been there myself a few times...I used to have several spare pcs and that's what I would do when in doubt...

Mark 88 has it, but there's a chance if the "Old PC" has a working OS that you could infect it too... So I use a Windows installer disc tro format drives that have infections.

Connect the "infected" drive to any computer Disconnect ALL other drives.

Insert a windows install disc, ANY windows install disc

When the ROm finished loading select the option to DELETE the partition and then format the drive.

After it finishes formatting and starts loading the install cut the power

Then take the drive and connect it to a computer with a working Anti Virus program
and run a "Full Scan" if the drive comes up clean you can use in any way you see fit.

There are however Viri that infect the boot sector and Master File table and those are the very devil to get rid of...
