i have a pair of 83 rangers and im wondering just how early they are. the one im not sure about bu the other one i think might actuall be one of the late 82 models. so my question is, does anyone know what number ford started with when they put them onthe rangers? Did they start with 000001, or was it something a little less obvious?

The key to finding a Ford vehicle's place in the production sequence is in the last 6 digits. The letter indicates a series of 99,999 (Starts a 00,001 and goes to 99,999) vehicles. The numbers after it indicate the vehicles place in that series.

I'll use my B2 as an example since I have the insurance card near me.

The last 6 digits are D40901. So it is in production series D, meaning that A, B, and C, each having 99,999 vehicles in them were all made first. Then mine is # 40,901 built in series D. So my Bronco II was #340,898 built in the 1988 model year.

If you suspect that either was a late CY 82 production vehicle, the series should be an A, or an early B. If the driver's door tags are still intact and legible they will have the month and year of the vehicle production.

thank you, that helped. so here is what i ffound out. my one truck is a late 82, number a 42885.

Ford Joined Chevrolet in responce to the midsize pickups that came from Japan and Ford introduced the all new Ranger in 1983. The Ranger replaced the Courier, which was basically a Mazda pickup with some Ford styling tweaks. Ford introduced the Ranger in mid-1982 as an early 1983 model. Your Ranger is an 83. My 83 4x4 Ranger was bought new January 1983 by the original owner and I bought it in late 84 with 4,000 miles on it. It was on the lot in mid 82 and was sold as an 83 model. There were no 82 Ford Rangers sold. I have asked my brother-in-law who has worked for Ford over over 25 years and he said the Ranger was first sold as a 1983 model..not a 1982. It is confusing as hell.

Meaning it still has the potential to be a CY 82 production vehicle. The first Ranger was an MY 83, but we all know that the CY and MY run about 6 months off of each other.

I know it is so confusing!! When I bought my 83 the original owner gave me the Ford sales brochure and it had all the new 83 vehicals in it. The Ranger photo and information and specs said...'New for 1983 the Ford Ranger'. The Ranger went on sale in late 82 as a 1983 model. But when I checked all info regarding a 1982 Ranger there is nothing about a 1982 Ranger. Only info I can find is that the 1983 Ranger that said it was released in late 1982. Just confusing!! I will check some more. I have a buddy in California who collects Ford and Chevy brochures from the 1920's on up. He loves them and sells stuff on Ebay once in awhile. I left him a voice mail at home last night to see if he has one for the Ranger.
