Here is the issue.. I am trying to register my truck, a 1997 Ranger (pictured below) The truck has passed on everything except for the fact that the only VIN they can find is the one on the dash. They believe the one on the door jam was painted over so we are going to try to paint stripper and see if we can uncover it. My friends have searched the frame and found nothing. I heard the engine has the VIN stamped but my engine is from a Mustang and then someone told me the VIN is etched into the glass.. well I have all new glass. The main issue is that if I dont have 2 VINs, I need a Level 2 inspection to get it registered which my truck will not pass (no airbags)

Can anyone shed some light/advice??

I've never heard of that, here you only need one VIN number and they always use the one from the dash, because the door can easily be changed where as it takes much longer to get at the dash one. I think they are BSing you asking for another VIN.

I think the reason is because the truck had an OFF-HIGHWAY ONLY title and I am now transferring it to a reglar street legal truck. This is in Arizona by the way.

thats an awesome truck. make sure you dont use too much paint stripper. you'll take off the sticker or the letering

the engine block and firewall maybe? saw online that there may be one "near the radiator on the id plate there are white stickers under the truck" also saw that they might even be on the diff. if all else fails call the ford dealership and see if they know

I wish it were that easy.. I need to find a shady DMV, then I would be in business.

It's stamped in the frame rail back past the frame arch for the real axle

On my '87 it's stamped on the drivers side rail, but I've seem others
where it was stamped on the passenger side.

It's also supposed to be stamped under the cab somewhere.

It may be hard to find, but if you haven't heavily coated
the frame with paint or some coating you might be able to
find it by "oblique lighting" Shine the light nearly parallel to
the frame surface... the letters might stand out for you...

search both outboard sides of the frame along the flat of the rail.

thats awesome news... because my truck's frame was cut off from the cab- back. thats all tube brother.

crap.

There was a buck tag somewhere originally. I have seem them on the radiator support and under the carpet/rubber mat on the cab floor.

I'd find someone with a really good printer/label maker- have them fab you up a new sticker matching the one on the dash. Affix it to the door jamb, smear a little paint on it (making it look like you rubbed paint off of it) and you're done.

You could also fab one out of a metal plate, tack it under the truck on the frame, and "discover" that one too...

I have a friend who is going to try and stamp the frame with the VIN.. Who knew driving my little ranger on the street would be such a hassle?
