VIN # Locations

the only time i had to do a tracing here in iowa was on my 64 dodge. the vin was too short and the computer threw up a red flag. i couldn't get it to trace good enough so i drove to the courthouse, they looked at it, said ok, paid my money and put on my plates. the lady i delt with is the most uptight lady in the place and i was sure i was going to have problems.

otherwise here in iowa, all you need is a title.

I say stamp it in on the frame like Allan suggested. I had to do the same on my Bike, when I replaced the front portion of the frame with regular tubing. Stamped it in, painted over it, then sanded the paint off to make it look more ligit. Worked great.

In a situation like mine or yours, I see no problem with it. The truck's not stolen, your not trying to decieve anyone, it's just a silly law.

I would just take the truck to a third party title comp. and see if they are shady enough to pass the truck. I know that more and more of these places are poping up. So I'm guessing that more than a few are shady enough to get it to pass.

well.. GOOD news for me (finally) A friend of mine scraped some paint off the door and found the 2nd VIN sticker and uncovered it completely. So now I have not had to do anything illegal or shady, my truck has 2 vins and hopefully once I put in a new speedo this week it will be registered! Im not sure why "my truck probably doesnt belong on the street.." It drives great and I assure you it belongs on the street a hell of a lot more then those monster trucks with the 20" lift and 44" tires that I am sure passed DMV inspections with flying colors..

I won't disagree with that.

Glad you found the sticker.

Your Ranger will have the VIN stamped on both the engine and transmission. Also on the frame or body structure somewhere. The main VIN's are on the instrument panel visible through the glass and on the safety cert label in the door jamb. Never grind off or deface a VIN, that is a serious issue with NHTSA and the NICB.

Nice to read some good advice.
Shame it took 3 pages to get the correct info.
It will sure help me out as well.

Skipping to the last page of a book has it's consequences, I guess so does NOT skipping to the last page. ;)

Nice find!

No, it wouldn't if you had actually read the earlier pages you'd see his ranger has a MUSTANG Engine (and presumeably transmission) in his truck.

As for a VIN on the engine? Get real.

My original 2.9 engine didn't have a VIN on it, neither did the
factory installed engine in EITHER of my Bronco2's or my '88
4cyl shortbox etc...

as for the "Cert" label? yeah, it's got the VIN on it but on my truck
I'm on my third set of doors, fortunatly the OP still has his original door...

Many laws are written and intended to stop lawbreakers, but lawbreakers
The intentional criminal type lawbreakers will simply ignore those laws or find another way around the law.
The rest of us whom the law was NEVER intended to harm run afoul of this bullshit all the time.

Frankly I could give a rat's ass about the letter of the law
because I believe in the spirit of the law, the INTENT of the law.

When we were shuffling parts two summers ago someone told
me what I was doing was "illegal" and that I could get in trouble
for doing it. mabey (with a large serving of bureaucratic imagination)
by the letter of the law, but if I were arrested
tried or convicted of shuffling my own property (truck parts) into
a different arraingment than the factory intended I would not
necissarily seek legal means to redress the injustice.

I have a sharp knife and an imagination that could make Stephen King puke.

Frankly I think that other people minding MY buisness
should be a capitol offense.

And with a lot of things in law, like dealing with the DMV
they are presuming guilt, because you have to PROVE innocence

And that's bullshit...

Well, then quote it as

"I have an overblown sense of Justice/Injustice, A sharp knife
and an imagination that could make Stephen King puke"

Because somehow the first part got omitted.
