so my ranger had this problem a while ago i was told it was rear end so i replaced it and no help. is whats happening is anytime i go 65 or above there is this weird shaking noise coming from what sounds like the transmission. and any speed over 50 i get a lot of vibration in the gear shifter handle its a 5 speed by the way. when i let off the gas there is this shutter and shaking noise for a second then everything goes away and it sounds perfect untill i get on the gas again then it does the same thing. it just doesnt feel safe and i cant figure out what it is. i also checked where the driveshaft goes into the transmission and it seems that i can wiggle the shaft up and down a little bit where it goes in the transmission any help would be appreciated i really need this truck

have you checked the engine/trans mounts? carrier bearing?

when you say you can move the driveshaft up and down a little......how much is a little?

i dont know how to check the mounts i tried to move the trans up and down and it would barely move andthe shaft prolly moves maybe a 1/16 of an inch or less whats the carrier bearing and how do i check that also could the drive shaft maybee not in the transmission enough cause you can se the rubber seal from the trans comming out and the shaft has like a half inch untill it gets fatter to the rest of the u joint

your d/s is in the right spot. it slips in and out as the suspension moves up and down, moving it in further could actually damage the trans.

the carrier bearing is the center support bearing on a two piece driveshaft. you probably have an aluminum one piece shaft....correct? I was just throwing that out there as another possibilty.

as far as testing the trans/engine mounts. They are made from rubber and metal. The rubber is "glued" (actualy heated I believe) into the metal frame. In time the rubber will begin to seperate from the metal. You can rock the engine side to side and see how much it moves while you shine a flashlight down into the mount, you will be able to see the seperation if there is any. If you cant see it, you should be able to spot excessive movement. Check to see if your fan blades are hitting the shroud. Thats a tell tale sign. There are lots of methods.

also, whens the last time you had your tires balanced?

well i took a look at the trans mount and i really didnt see any rubber in there i see cracked rubber around the outside but thats about it is it hard to replace this mount and do you think thats the problem cause i can go buy one real quick and put it in tonight if its not that bad to replace how likely is it to be the tires not balance will they do the same thing eben when i let off the gas though would the vibration go away and its not the whole truck that vibrates its just the shifter lever and the clutch pedal a little thanks for your replies i will deffianetely up your rep

if it comes and goes with throttle then its probly not the tires. tires being out of balance would get worse and worse as you go faster.

the tranny mount is pretty easy to replace. put a floor jack and wood block under the trans to support it, unbolt everything, jack it up a LITTLE BIT and replace the mount and button it all up.

But it sounds more like engine mounts to me - the tranny mount is a single mount where the engine mounts are two mounts. engines mount are what mainly keep the whole thing from rocking side to side.......

also keep in mind a small amount of shake is normal when accelerating/letting off teh gas......as mentioned the engine trans is mounted on rubber and its moving 3k+ lbs so when you let off it IS going to move a little.

yeah i figured it was supposed to move a little ill double check the motor mounts but when i looked at the trans mount i really didnt see any rubber it looked like metal and metal i seen a big gap where i could put my finger underneath it also it doesnt do it at high revs all the time just when speed increases i don;t know if that helps at all ill check the motor mounts again though

i checked the mounts and they didnt look bad and when i tried to move the motor it was pretty hard to move it i could only get it to move like maybee an inch i mean i dont have 150 hp though lol
