sand down the part a little, step up to pretty fine grit sandpaper. shoot the nightshade to whateever darkness you want, shot a couple coats of clear and wetsand until perfectly smooth.
my taillights were new when i did them, so i wiped them down with wax and grease remover then hit them with a microfiber towel to get any leftover lint off, then shot 2 coats on them and called it good. just take your time and work in as close to a dust free area as you can when youre painting, and do one coat at a time cause its easy to overspray it and make it run, ask me how i know (at least it was on the gfs truck and not mine) heres some sample pics, i did the tails when they were new, but the front marker lights are the originals from 1994.
