im trying to narrow down on possibilities before i go ripping my motor apart. at idle and under a load there is no noise. as soon as the rpms float, like right before a shift, it starts clacking away

heres the background. truck is in my sig. 200000 miles. when i bought it there was a lot of engine work needed so i replaced what i had to but it still had some valvetrain noise. i installed brand new complete heads. new rocker arms.

me and my dad think its just the pushrods are a little worn. if i get the money i want to put in a compcam 410 and a set of longer pushrods(.050" required) and new lifters if they are worn. do you think it would be worth my time to just get pushrods made .050" over now so if i do get the cam i will be all set? any other suggestions?

first suggestion is to install a positive oil pressure gauge and see what the oil pressure is do through the rpm range. With 200k on the engine I suspect it will take more than pushrods to fix the problem. Did it have the same problem before you done any work to it? If not you may have shook loose some junk that is now partially clogging the oil pickup. 200k on a well maintained engine is nothing but it can be the end of the line on one that has been abused. good luck.

well i suspect it was not abused but neglected. it did have valvetrain noise before but it was worse. the new top end got rid of most of it. but theres still some. im guessing its maybe only on one or 2 rocker arms from the sound of it. also it burns oil. as of right now it probably goes through a quart every 3 or 4 weeks. but i also am running a straight pipe from the cat back. when i had a muffler it was like a quart every 6 weeks. idk if that has any relevance to the noise or not. ive tried using restore for the oil system and the fuel system.
