Ok I finally got my 88' 2.9 to fire! Now i have knocking coming from the valve cover. I believe the book calls for 1 1/2 turn on the valve lash bolts but a mechanic had told me to leave .008 between the springs and the lashings. what do you guys suggest.

It has hydraulic lifters make sure the cylinder you are adjusting is on top dead center of the compression stroke turn the adjuster untill you get a lash and then back until it just touches then turn it in 1 and 1/2 turns. If you get them too loose you can throw a push rod and it will make alot of noise just rember in until it touches or zero clearance then 1-1/2 turs in. And that is a engine cold adjustment. The 2.8 had solid lifters and you need lash on them but hydraulic lifters are always zero lash and make sure all of them are adjusted the same or the engine will be out of balance and you can possibly burn a valve or piston running too lean.

??? First I've ever heard??

I'm gonna need an explaination of this!
All that could happen is there would be a very SLIGHT difference in the amount of lift/valve opening..
VERY slight as the hydrolic lifters are designed to regulate themselves for maximum opening.
Running lean doesn't enter into the amount of opening of the valves.

I know this is old, but funny my reman started loud ticking at approx 1800km and my CE light started coming on, code says too lean. Maybe there's other trains of thoughts on this....? I'm interested- never had that light come on in my life in any truck.
