Valve Gaskets

Replacing my valve gaskets and broke some of the bolts that mount the valve cover. Looking online for the bolts and washers but having hard time finding them. In matter of fact I don't know what to call them. So I cant really do a complete search. So what would those bolt be called? I am seeing cylinder head bolts? is that them. Working on a 88 ranger 2.9L

Take one of the bolts you did not break to an ACE Hardware store and buy some just like it.

What enjr44 said. If they are like the 4.0 they will be 10mm heads and about 12mm long.

Yep, same for a 2.8 block.

If you don't have one, rent or borrow an inch/pound torque wrench so you don't break off the new bolts.

the problem is not so much tightening them down and breaking them, it is removing them after they sat undisturbed for 15 years or more and start rusting. when I did the valve covers on my 97 Ranger back in 2010, one of the bolts was so rusty that a 10mm socket just spun on it. I had to pound a 3/8" socket onto the head of the bolt to remove it.

My valve covers were also rusted out, and I ended up getting a set at the junkyard and grabbed all of the bolts from it as well, so I had extras. I picked out the best looking bolts and pitched the ones that gave me issues when I removed them.

I'd just get the same size. It's only valve covers.

And don't over torque them, I think it is about 60 inch pounds.
