Valve adjustment?

i have the same book...you cant lie to me :icon_thumby:

first off, it says for 2.9 and 4.0 engines...and i know 4.0s dont have adjustable lash. secondly, it says "if equipped". thirdly, it refers you to section 1-32 for cold valve lash adjustment...where it then says that all RBV engines use hydraulic valvetranes than cannot be adjusted.

im not saying it doesnt have valve adjustment...im just saying i dont see any proof anywhere ":icon_cheers:"

I just happen to have a rocker assembly layin around from my old 2.9... I'll post a pic...

It's not exactly where it's supposed to be (I just picked it up off the ground and set it on the head, lol) but you can see the adjuster nut on it...

Wow, crappy picture too, haha... It gets the point across though...

thanks bean. that settles that.

i still dont get why ford did that. seems a little redundant to me.

Maybe it's the same rocker arms from the 2.8 and they just wanted to use up what they had? That's the only thing I can think of... Then it wouldn't make sense because I'm sure Ford didn't have 5 years worth of 2.8 rocker arms to put into 5 years worth of 2.9's... Ford does some strange things sometimes though...

2-3 hours I would designate for only re-adjusting the lifters once you get there, it is very time consuming. I was also under the impression that the push rod / rocker arm wearing issue was more of a 4.0L quirk. If it's a ticking problem that's at hand, don't get discouraged if that does not resolve it.

Thanks for the pic Bean, I was busy all weekend and didn't get a chance to visit the forum yesterday. Saved me a few minutes of ripping that old valve cover off. :icon_thumby: You'd think a tech library source would be enough to show it, but I guess that information apparently isn't credible. :icon_confused:

The reason they have adjusters is to push the hydraulic lifter plunger down slightly into the lifter bore which is where it's designed to be when the engine is assembled. Many other engines have the same adjuster setup while some have you simply adjust the rocker pivot stud down to compress the lifter.

As for what the Chilton manual says, I have a Chilton and a Haynes and they both say the same thing which is what I stated previously. I did not type out the whole section as I figured people were only interested in the part that was relevant.

any modern internal cumbustion engine has absolutely no lash adjustment at all. you bolt the rockers on and go. any and all lash adjustment is taken care of by the hydraulic lifters. ive had the rockers off of more than a few engines...the 2.9 is the first one ive seen with both manual AND automatic lash adjutments.

While the 2.9 rockers are adjustable if you think you need to adjust
them it only indicates an internal engine problem
