I have an 1988 4x4 5sp 2.9 ranger and i want to do a v8 swap. I want to keep the 5sp in it so what do i have to do to bolt it up to a v8

it wont work. even if you could get an adapter plate for it, your trans wont hold up no time. you probably got the fm146 which isnt real strong (better than an fm145 tho)

maybe you could get a zf5 which is a 5 speed for a v8 or the np435 or t18 which are 4 speeds with granny low

X 2, the stock transmission isn't going to handle the torque from the V8. M5ODR2 is another choice.

The stock transmission will handle the torque just fine... until it breaks, which won't take long.

your best easiest and cheapest swap would be buy a running fulsize rig with the motor tranny combo you want. then you will have all the correct parts and pieces that all fit togeter. none of this adapting, piecemeal, time-consuming, researching ect. i speak from experiance. ex : junkyard tranny-$300, adapterplate$300 to tcase , engine$300, all the little odds and ends you will end up needing ect... or... whole running rusted out truck from the next door neighbor $500 then you just need to fab an engine and tranny mount. then you use the extra money to buy a welder because before long, well, lets just say rangers seem to grow the longer you keep em. lol

agreed.. fm 146 is garbage. i have one now. it my second in a year. quiet as a mouse when i put it in, now its noisy as hell. im using the m5od-r2. i can keep my brand new hydraulics lol
