V8 Swap questions about 4x4 and rear axle

Hi, over the summer I plan on dedicating most of my time to doing a v8 swap. I currently have a 99 V6 ranger and the donor vehicle will be a 99 5.0 V8. I'm going to keep it stock, for now. So the swap should hopefully be alright. My issue is concerning my on the fly 4x4 drive. I hardly ever drive in 4x4 hi or low so I feel that I might want to keep my stock (ranger) transfer case. I have heard about advanced adapters making kits to bolt into the new explorer trans.

-Will I be able to keep the automatic t/c even when I switch in my ranger computer for the new Explorers?
-Is there the possibility of switching my automatic t/c to a manual with manual locking hubs to?

I simply don't feel like doing all the fab work to move the engine and transmission 3/8" over to accommodate for a bigger (BW4406) t/c.

Another issue Is concerning the rear axle. I would prefer disk brakes (which the explorer has, of course). To my knowledge the explorer has the leaf springs under the axle, and the axle is also longer than the rangers (I am unsure about the specific length though).

-Can I simply have a axle specialist reposition the perches and shock mounts to fit my rangers configuration (4" lift by bigger springs)?
-Will it be ok to have a wider axle (explorers) on the back end of the ranger?

Thanks for help with these issues.

Explorer rear can have new perches added easily. The width will be fine, the Explorer is .75" wider on each end. You can add Mustang Discs to your current rear if you choose, it's easy. You can swap to a manual if you choose. Repositioning the motor slightly should be very simple (couple slots on the Explorer mount plates...)

You'll need to view the Ranger EVTM for your year to see if the stock engine ECU controls any 4x4 funcion. Click the 5.0 manifold pic on the TRS home page for Bob Rwenzing's tips on the later swap.

The computer doesn't control the 4x4, so you're fine there. The stock 4x4 will still work as well behind the v8 as it does now. However, the adapter is a PITA, as it requires the trans to be completely torn down and rebuilt for installation, plus is quite spendy.

However, since you are considering switching to manual shift anyways, using a bw4406 t-case is a much stronger and cheaper option. It bolts right to the explorer trans with no adapter needed. Then add a pair of AVM hubs, and you have a far more reliable 4x4 system.

I have a 97 v8 and trans, and a 4406 t-case in my 98 ranger. Didnt need to shift the driveline over for clearance. Its tight, but it clears everything.

As for the rear axle, use the 'sploader axle. Its stronger than the ranger 8.8 anyways, which is good with a v8. A good shop can make quick work of moving the spring perches and shock mounts if you don't want to do it yourself.
I'm running the ex 8.8 with a detroit locker and 4.10's, and have been very happy with it.

Thanks for your quick replies and help. I now have to start searching junkyards for a bw4406 :)
