Hey guys i have a 2000 regular cab ranger that had the 2.5l and a 5 speed trans. I am putting in a late 80's model 5.0 and an overdrive trans just wondering what problems to expect. I know that the explorer motor would be the best way to go but i got three of these motors for free so thats what im going to be using. thanks for any help

Run any motor you want but if you don't use the Explorer computer, wiring and electronics, you are asking for a lot of wiring and figuring out how to run the speedometer. Best get a wiring diagram for both your 2000 and what ever the donor engine came out of. Cheap on E-Bay, get one put out by Helms, that's the best.

so i will need the computer out of an explorer to make my speedometer work?

That's one of the "Fun" things with the newer Rangers, too many things feed thru the computer. There might be a way around it but have no idea how.
Try and send you some info.

Do the Explorer V-8 Computers use all of the same sensors as the late model Rangers, i.e. vehicle/trans sensors that is ?

robbinst, thanks for putting this in.

Both the 2000 ranger and Explorer get their VSS from the rear end sensor. That feeds into the anti-lock brake system and then gets fed out to the CPU and instrument cluster (and the general electronic module sometimes). I can scan portions in from both manuals but busy here now. Always best to just get the wiring diagrams for yourself. Usually home but working. Got the 2001 and 2005 Ranger manuals also.
