The 1996-2003 Ranger and Explorer Tachs could do 4cyl, V6 or V8
This is assuming you are using the 1997 cluster and wiring
If NOT then read this thread:
https://www.explorerforum.com/forums/threads/tachometer-mod-v6-to-v8-swap.174682/
Below only applies to 1995 and up
The instrument cluster will have 3 connectors, 10 pin, 12 pin and 16 pin
slot 8 on the 10 pin connector will have a Ground wire, this is for V6 tach
You need to remove this pin, small screwdriver is used to release it from connector, you need the pin/wire intact
You will move this pin/wire to slot 16 on the 16 pin connector, which will be open, so you just need to push the pin/wire in and it will lock in place
And that's it
So the cluster is not 4cyl, V6 or V8, the Vehicles WIRING is 4cyl, V6 or V8, the 3 connectors wiring
Only Pin 16 of the 16-pin grounded ==> V8
Only Pin 8 of the 10-pin grounded ==> V6
Neither grounded ==> 4cyl
So you have to remove pin 8 ground, not just "add" a ground to pin 16
