V8 and Mitsubishi 5 speed

Nothing currently under your truck is going to support 35" tires or a V8. The Mitsu trans is the weakest stick they ever put in the ranger/BII. The 7.5 and D28 are fine for 31's and 33's if you go easy.

You need an F150 trans and Tcase, and atleast a D35 and an 8.8" out back to hold the 35's and someof that stuff might need beefed up when you run the 5.0 depending on how you drive it.

What he said. I blew the Mitsu trans (twice might I add) and the 7.5 out of my '87 STX while running a tired 2.9L and 31s. It's just not worth the hassle in keeping this stuff. My advice to you especially since you live in a neighborhood with a HOA is to do the work once and be done with it. Another question is why are you stuck on an AOD? They are pretty heavy first of all, they rob quite a bit of power, and really aren't very strong until you start sinking money into them. Why not go with an M50DR2 and transfer case from an F150? Seems to me that it would be more of a straightforward swap since you already have a 5 speed in it already.

I would also go with the M50R2 if it were mine. But the OP said he wanted an automatic transmission.

its not that i want and auto its i just wanted something where i didnt have to fabricate everything, its a daily driver and everyone keeps saying stay away from the c4 which is what i wanted to use in the first place. i will look into the M50R2, and i dont know if i mentioned i have 4.10 gears ready to drop so i hope my 7.5 can hold up with those and running 31s. if i grab a f150 transfer does it require modification or is it more or less a swap in?

If you don't care that your tranny doesn't shift really smooth, you could go with a T18/T19/NP435 as well that bolts up to your 302 with stock parts. Making the clutch work isn't hard and those specific transmissions are everywhere, cheap, and bulletproof.

Could also do a small block ZF 5 speed, but they are kinda hard to find and expensive, but they do shift nice.

I don't know why AA and others bothered making an adapter for the TK and Mitsu 5 speeds. I have never once heard of anyone actually using one so I can't imagine they sell very many.

Well no one on here uses them... because we say otherwise. but i imagine alot of people do get them...

If you wanna blow the dough on the adapter for the Mitsu, go ahead. But, can I suggest you'll use a stopwatch to measure the life of that trans behind your 302? I'd suggest a M5OD R2 out of an F150 with a 4.2 V6. The shifter will end up very close to the stock position. The only thing you'll need to do is drill the bellhousing holes out to accept 7/16 bolts. If you really want an auto, a C4 is a good choice because of it's compact size. I run a C4 with the stock driveshaft and a C4 yoke.

Exactly. The M50D-R2 doesn't take much fab work at all to get it to work.

No matter what wheel/tire combo you choose, the Mitsu transmission is going to grenade with a V8 twisting it. The money you spend on an adapter is better put toward a V8 transmission.

Couldn't have said it better.
