V8 and factory 5-speed

Nope. Probably wouldn’t want to if you could.

You could try welding it

What you can do is retain your pedal assembly, steering column, hydraulics, etc when you do a swap. Then you'd use the M5OD-R2 from a 4.2 equipped truck and it will keep your shifter in the same location as your current setup. Do the V8 swap as normal (Explorer/Mountaineer donor), then you'd need a tuner to disable some of the automatic functions so it doesn't throw a check engine light.

Use the starter, engine separator plate and clutch for a '96 F-150.

Why the '96 specifically?

Why the '96 specifically?

As late as possible, they changed stuff around over the years.

When ordering online it is what I went with. All M5ODR2 clutch stuff might be the same, I figured a '96 would be more likely to be similar to a '97 (first year for a 4.2) than '87.

That stupid engine separator plate, the hole for the starter is bigger on a 5.0 than a 4.2. 4.2 one will work but it takes a lot of tedious dremeling to enlarge the hole as round and even as possible. As they changed things over the years that hole changed, I am not sure how far back it goes. I stumbled into that and did the dremel route, it sucks.

Gotcha - so you're looking for a separator plate that's originally designed for a 5.0 rather than a 4.2 to eliminate the dremel step. Potentially stupid question - can you not get away with the 4.2 starter on the 5.0?

Well you see Ford can't do anything easy, we have to have different depths for the ring gear. The different hole diameter is so you don't use the wrong starter for the wrong flywheel.

The ones that fit the smaller hole is for the 3/4" depth, the bigger hole is for 3/8" depth. The left side of the graphic I linked in the my last post has it kind of drawn out.

And for added giggles they made seperator plates of different thicknesses too, I was really worried about that but mine seems to work fine.

It was a stressful two nights until I found that graphic and figured out exactly what the heck was going on when my new starter wouldn't fit.
