My pending brother in law toured a factory up in Detroit around 2000 and got a pic of a mythical beast. Even has an Explorer nose grafted on (I don't really care for the Explorer nose but cool to see it done) They even added the bodylines so it matched with a Ranger body. Wonder whatever happened to it, my brother went thru in '07 and didn't see it. Probably got crushed like many prototypes...

One of my online friends has done an Explorer front end swap on their Ranger. I'd have to see more proof than this picture to believe that Ford ever gave this any thought.

Looks like any other modified Ranger out there, pretty much

It was in his photo album with a bunch of other pics from his trip.

When he first told me about it he didn't know I had a V8 Ranger, kind of an odd thing to make up for idle conversation when he found his album when he was moving. He liked driving the Lightning they had there better.

No underhood shots but the bodywork is interesting non-the-less. That alone makes it very different than any other modified Ranger out there, pretty much.

EDIT: Did a yahoo search for "ford built V8 Ranger prototype" and came up with this:

Cool thanks for posting that link!

I will say it was very cool to see the process of getting the Explorer front end on my friend's Ranger

I bet.

I looked into putting a first gen nose on a first gen Explorer, that one just isn't meant to happen :fie:

I don't care much for the explorer front clip either but it is cool to see Ford went though the process to make it different. By the date of the article this would make it the first 5.0L 98+ ranger.

Hmmmm.....

The articals photo has some issues:

The bumper & valance panel with fogs is 93-97 vintage, the Expo parts are 95up, and the wheels are Cobra R's.

The only SVT Ranger I've seen is the Lightning Bolt:

==================
How's the exhaust run on that?:icon_confused:
Haha!! The headers run forward and then down into a muffler with a tip that pops out of the front bumper on each side

And the engine is from a '93 Cobra.

Kinda sounds like some guys in SVT wanted to make a V8 Ranger and grabbed existing parts off of shelves to make it look different while keeping the cost down.

Neat idea, obviously it didn't work but they gotta get an E for effort anyway. :icon_thumby:

First record I have of Ford doing a 5.0 Ranger goes back to a '88' build in Popular Hot-rodding. Had a list of all the production parts, think article might be buried up in tech articles.
