using explorer gauge set

Have any of you had any problems using explorer gauge clusters when you do a swap? I've been trying to get a 97 explorer set to work in my 97 ranger and i can't get the temp gauge to read right. It is showing lower than normal. i tried to put my ranger gauge into it and it won't work right either. I noticed that the explorer gauge had a resistor running across two of the prongs that the one on my ranger didn't have. Does anyone have a suggestion. I have put them together with every different combination and they won't all work right.
