got an rf modulator from a friend today. its a radio shack version. plugged the coax from the antenna into it and the coax from it into the tv. tried the tv and it on bth channels 3 and 4. tv is set to air and not cable. ive tried programming the channels on both air and cable but when its done it just gets stuck on AV i cant go thru the channels. idk if the rf box has a remote or a setup. but the flat screen works with the antenna.

do i need to use the red white And yellow cords? or do i need a vcr

What are you trying to do?

The RF modulator you describe is to hookup a device like a DVD player that only has Yellow, Red/White OUT, to a TV that only has Coax In.

Since most TVs now have Yellow, Red/White IN these RF modulators are not needed any more.

It is not a tuner.
It takes Composite Video(Yellow) and Analog Audio(Red/White) signals and "modulates" them to an RF(radio frequency) channel, usually channel 3 or 4, there would be a switch on the back to select which channel 3 or 4.

im trying to get antanna tv. on and older television and i was told this would do it.

RonD is correct. Post the model and brand of both your tv and modulator.

the tv is an old rca its got antanna stuff on the back. one of the oldest tvs ive seen in awhile. still got buttons intead of dials. has the yellow red and white ports and has coax in. cant find any model numbers on iether box or tv.

can only find a cat number 15-2525 stereo rf modolator.

i thought you had to have a descrambler thingy to get antenna tv?

tell me what i need and ill buy it.

my old man has the antenna thats on top of the house hooked up to his flat screen in the living room. he also has a signal booster. but it works fine without it.

i ran a splitter and 50 foot of coax to the other end of the house (my room). its currently plugged into the tv but i only get a channel and its hardly there.

tbh ive never messed with antenna before... my gf got the one channel we have.. lmfao face palm

got it to work by using a coax to antenna splitter on the back of my tv

you may also want a digital converter. they boost the signal and there are many more channels

You want an ATSC tuner box.

NTSC was the older analog broadcast format, i.e. VHF ch2, 6, 8, UHF ch 22, 36, etc....
This is what your older TV tuner can tune in.

ATSC is the new Digital broadcast format, i.e. VHF ch2.1, 6.1, 8.1, UHF ch 22.1, 36.1, ect....

You can buy ATSC tuner boxes for SD(standard definition) and HD(high definition).
SD tuners run about $60
HD tuners about $150

Your TV is not HD so get an SD tuner, it will have a coax out, most HD boxes don't.

The NTSC channels are disappearing fast, so you will lose all of them in time.

The ATSC tuner converts ATSC to NTSC so your TV can "understand it"
The ATSC box will come with a remote, so TV stays on ch3 and you change channels using the ATSC box's remote.

RF modulator converts Composite Video to NTSC, so not related to Antenna signals.

They are pickier on what channels they get though, one you kinda got before will just show up pixellated if at all. They are switching over the analog channels, probably not many left (apparently one in the OP's area)

I get about 10 channels on my box.

Gonna need a converter box. :icon_thumby:
