using a pre 95 2.3, in 97+ ranger? is it possible

the only diff. i know of is in 95+ the oil pump location changed. can i swap a pre 95 (like out of a 90's mustang) into my 97 ranger and still use the 97 ecu, etc..? i'm having no luck sourcing a 95+ motor.
