As some of you who know who dabble in vintage garden tractors. You can't buy Tecumseh ignition parts anymore. I have come across a few different methods of building replacement ignition systems.

One using a GM HEI module and a ford speed sensor as a crank trigger, and a standard 12v coil.

Now this method doesn't allow for the "easy" start up of first spark at TDC. Due to not having the ability to advance the timing. You have to set it up to just start and run at full 20 deg advance.

Now I've seen another guy use an ls2 coil, an ls2 crank trigger that's induction style and a Chrysler ignition control module to build a setup that allows for ignition advance.

I also seen a guy talking about using a dura spark setup to achieve the same thing. Any ideas on how that's possible?

I have no idea. But i would think the duraspark system would be looking for more then 1 cylinder and it woulg probably confuse it? Not sure

I gotta do moar research on dura spark see what the deal is

I wish I would have saved the information but I seem to remember years ago a guy rigging a microsquirt system with fuel injection on his old garden tractor…

I used to be active on a couple tractor forums years ago, now I need to get back to it since my stuff is getting older and I actually have questions and not just looking at all the nifty things other people did

For a Tecumseh?

Why not use a motorcycle ignition? You can get standalone CDI for a single cylinder with or without built-in timing curve. Can be run from AC or DC. All in the CDI selection.

Check out this video. Shows how to build a standalone ignition that will work on any single cylinder with a timing pickup. IF the Tecumseh has points, ya can even use the as the pickup.

What ignition parts are you having trouble replacing? Year and model of the engine?

i have been currently fixing 1998-> lawn tractors and have not had an issue getting parts or adapting things.

my brother and i used an ignition box from an 85 f150 to run his little yamaha 50 or 70 four wheel when the stock ignition under the cover on the crank went out. i think it was called a cdi, like mentioned above. this was years ago but we found the instructions online for doing it. we had to adjust the spark plug to a huge gap and that four wheel would start on the first pull and would pop a wheelie with ease after the installation was done.

my brother started trying to buy all the four and three wheelers he could find that had ignition issues so he could fix and resell them but they are not as easy to find as he thought

Interesting 🤔 adjusting the plug gap. I got it running with the parts I mentioned above in the OP. Just stays 20deg advance now. I just crank it first then flip on the ignition.
