ok engine is in and mounted, sent it to the exhaust shop, thay did an excellent job with that.

this is and 84 carb engine, it has a backfire thru the carb, I believe I've got an air leak around the carb base, the air system has been removed and properly plugged, no air pump , no air tube, no egr. replaced the egr plate with a spacer plate, I believe I have an air leak at that point, plus the timing may be retarded

the only thing I didnt replace was the water pump, guess whats leaking, lol
did manage to use the superduty radiator with the v belt set up, there is the issue of removing the water pump, bit of a juggle, have to use pusher fans but its doable.

which brings up a question throttle linkage works good but when I hook up the transmission tv cable, which is brand new and has very suttle bends, it takes two feet to push the pedal down, dam
any ideas?

was pulling it up on the trailer and wow did it want to spin the tires
gonna be fun

Vacuum leaks are easy to locate, just use a can of spray carb cleaner and while the engine is running spray all around the intake and carb base, when the cleaner gets sucked into the leak, you'll hear the engine change pitch. Sometimes a lean condition will cause a lean backfire, check the accellerator pump linkage for excessive slack, the squirters in the throttle bores should shoot fuel the instant the throttle is opened.

I have found a piece of vacuum hose around three feet long put one end up to your ear and search around the gaskets and fittings with the other. If you stick it in the carb you will know what to listen for. Spraying WD40 works too but the vacuum line trick will pinpoint the leak for you. Be careful of moving parts.

found a leak but not all

found a gasket under the card leaking, replaced all the gaskets under the carb
started the unit up sounded good for about a minute then I started noticing a small pop thru the card sounds about like snapping your fingers, if you open the throttle the engine begins to accel then pops loudly and dies. I think there is still another air leak I'll try the aforementioned ideas. also the screws on the base of the ford 2bbl they are fuel screws and not air screws, right? so if I open them and things get better I could have to lean jet

Might want to make sure you don't have 2 plug wires switched. I had a pop every so often, turns out 3 and 4 plug wires were switched.

Could be the exhaust gas is buring the gasket under the carb. If your intake has an open EGR port under the carb, then simply replacing the EGR spacer with a PCV spacer isn't going to work here. You need a metal gasket to plug the open EGR port.

valve timing

it occured to me that the timing chain could have jump, engine wont take throttle without backfiring thru the carb, could be off a tooth

Check the simple stuff. Plug wiring routing and initial timing.

found it

one of the exhaust lobes on the cam is almost gone so lets see which one to replace it with hmmmmmm

Ah, yea, been there-done that twice. Forgot all about both episodes. With the wiped exhaust lobe, the pressure builds in the affected cylinder til the excess pressure over rides the intake charge and is forced up thru the intake.
