Earlier I posted about needing a TK5 shifter as mine grenaded inside of my transmission. I read in this forum about a TK4 shifter being adapted to the TK5 transmission along with pictures and reports of it being used by some from this forum. I contacted those who had used this conversion and got good advice from them.
I finally found a good TK4 shifter via Craigslist where a person had a TK4 and transfer case for $40.00. I bought this and took the shifter off and modified it by taking a die grinder to the inside of the bolt holes moving the holes about 1/4 of the original bolt hole size. I bolted it to my transmission but could not get it to go into reverse. I had noticed that when I was driving it with a borrowed TK4 shifter using 2 bolts if the bolts were left just a little loose one could get the trans into reverse. I cut a new gasket from a roll of gasket material and bolted it on and it would not go into reverse when the bolts were tight. Thinking about it going in while just a little loose I cut another gasket and added it to the first along with RTV sealant to fill up the slightly larger holes and slight mismatch of the 2 parts and bolted it all down. It now works perfectly!
I'm guessing there is just enough difference in the 2 different parts that the TK4 shifter must be just a touch longer causing it to be too tight when bolted down without using something to space it a little higher as I did with 2 layers of gasket material.
I certainly have to recommend using the TK4 shifter on the TK5 as it is indeed made out of metal and is much stronger built. With the TK4 shifter one does not have to worry about any "plastic" breaking and leaving one without a functioning shifter.
Thanks to all that replied and offered suggestions!
