I bought the truck from a co worker, no crank no start, I replaced bad battery and starter, got it to turn but didn't sound right the belts spun but sounded like no compression. So I immediately assumed the timing chain, pulled everything apart to replace the timing chain and looks like the marks are where they have to be and there isn't too much slack in the chain. I'm kinda bummed because I didn't find what I thought I was going to. But I am going to replace the chain and sprockets anyway since I'm in there, and replacing the crank sensor as well, it looks bad. If it doesn't start up after putting it all back together does ANYONE HAVE ANY OTHER IDEAS? I'M hoping this fix the issue but anyone deal with something like this before?? (Updated)!!!
So everything is put back together and pretty much back to where I was, spoke to the person I bought the truck from and they told me " it started sounding like a ticking like a bad lifter right before it shut off out of nowhere " now I guess valve cover coming off and gonna check heads next.

Did you run an actual compression test before tear down?

I believe some of the 3.0L engines had issues with exhaust valve seats.

No I didn't do a compression test with a gauge, I went off past experience where the same sound and issue ended up being timing issue, but I never had the starter spin all the belts let's and no compression sound at all. So I kinda jumped the gun honestly, I didn't see any leaks or cracks on anything, but my next bet was gonna be the heads. Wanted to do the cheap fix first ya know

I understand the sound of a free wheeling engine... been there before.

Typically a cam timing issue.

I know they had some valve seat issues... but for it to happen to all cylinders at the same time is unlikely.

Not sure what you will find. I would pop the valve covers and roll the engine over and watch valve movement.

I'll be curious to hear what you find...

If still no go after reinstalling everything then definitely my next step is to check the valves/heads

If it's cranking, you need to verify that it's getting adequate fuel pressure. There's no reason to go tearing into the engine even more than you already have without doing a simple fuel pressure check first.

If you've confirmed it's got adequate fuel pressure, and spark then a compression test might be worthwhile.

That's all assuming that it's not showing any fault codes to narrow your search.

First thing I did was fuel and spark test. The motor DOES NOT CRANK LIKE NORMAL. OUT is just the starter spinning the crank with no load which led me to timing chain
