Unknown ports/hoses

Good Evening All,

If this is in the wrong forum please let me know. I have a 97 4.0 with a hose that leads to nowhere and two ports that I think are missing a hose.

I've uploaded pictures... the first has two colors - the blue is the beginning and ending of one hose. The red is where I think another hose should be but I'm not completely sure. It looks like the plastic port that is connected to the head is broken. If anyone has an ID of what that is so I can order it I would appreciate that.

The second picture has a white T-connector between two hoses but the third port doesn't connect to anything else. I imagine that is not how the original line was intended, so any help with an ID and what I should do there would be helpful. This is located right below the driver's side windshield.

First picture is the DPFE sensor, its two hoses are not vacuum hoses, there are exhaust hoses, they run to the EGR Pipe that goes from exhaust manifold to the EGR valve

The second picture is the power brake booster hose, it is a vacuum hose, never seen a "T" on that hose before??
May be some one added it to do vacuum testing on the engine or to put a vacuum gauge in the cab
Cap it, for sure, then see if there are any systems, like cab vents, that are acting up



DPFE(feedback pressure) sensor is used by the computer to see how much exhaust gas is going into the intake when computer activates the EGR Valve
One hose is closer to EGR Valve and one is farther away, the hose closer to the valve would have lower pressure as EGR Valve opened
So the hoses have an "order" on the sensor, usually there is a smaller and larger hose so easy to tell which goes where

Thank you for the reply @RonD! I was able to order and replace the DPFE sensor since mine had one of the ports broken off. Luckily I ordered two exhaust hoses to replace both since I ended up breaking the one that I had as I was removing it. Hardest part was getting the hoses onto the ports on the exhaust manifold. Got them all fitted and clamped down so should be g2g there!

Going to order a simple connector now to get that "T" hose replaced. Cab vents have not been working since I bought the truck, only defrost. I also have a vacuum hose on the left side of the engine bay that needs to be replaced though, so it could be two issues compounding the air issue.

The cab Vents get Vacuum from the Vacuum reservoir(black ball) located in front of engine bay, passenger side down low and in front of inner fender, can see if from underneath front bumper
It has two of the hard plastic vacuum hoses, both black
One runs to the engine, the vacuum source
The other black line runs on the top of frame to the Firewall on the passenger side of Heater/Fan box, so hard to see where it goes in, but its the main vacuum feed for the Vent system
There will also be a Grey Vacuum line, same hard plastic, that comes out of firewall at the same place, but it runs up to the Heater By-pass valve in engine bay
So you can follow it to the firewall to see where Black line is

These hard plastic lines are used because they are cheap and can be color coded
But often melt, near exhaust, or break when older
They can be easily repaired by splicing a "rubber" hose, of correct diameter, over cut off ends of the hard plastic line
These are vacuum lines so no clamps are needed, just a snug fit

Defrost is the default setting for the 2 vent doors, so no vacuum at Vent control panel in cab = Defrost always

The most common issue is the hard plastic black vacuum line from Vacuum Reservoir to the firewall
Next is no vacuum at "the ball", so the black line that runs from reservoir to engine vacuum source is unhooked or broken
3rd is the Vacuum reservoir is cracked, BUT...........you should still have some Vent control unless its REALLY REALLY cracked wide open, lol

Replaced the vacuum hose to the black ball and now I have air movement! Although it is only AC and the heat is not working… so I’ll have to do some troubleshooting there. Thanks for the help!

In 1995, and up, Heat is controlled by an electric motor on the Blend Door
Its located above glove box on the left
