Underpowered, Overbuilt Ranger build....-w- air shocks, 4 linked Dana 60 front & 40s

yeah that makes sense, was just curious, thanks

Shane....have you ever heard of anyone with coilovers using a winch on the front to suck it down for better handling on road? I have heard that in order to run air shocks for some guys who still want to be able to run down the road, some of them need to do this to stiffen up the ride a little. You ever heard of this?

On the street? No. I have tried it. It REALLY make it ride like a ricer. It really doesn't help body roll. The only time I use mine is on steep climbs (when the motor starts knocking due to no OP) or on really steep sidehills. It helps there too.

Underpowered, Overbuilt Ranger build & 5 spd swap / 4 linked 60 front & 44s on H1s

Alrght, kinda a big update.

Brought home the Exploder. She ran. That's all I'm gonna say. This thing was seriously, the biggest jimmy rigged piece of shit I've seen in a long time. We're talkin bungee cord holdin battery down, broken engine mount fixed with a ratchet strap, no grilled ugly. Real bad. It even had a custom "I wanted a sunroof so a sawzall cut and some plexiglass and silicone later, I was in buisness" style sunroof in it......Some people, I swear....lol.....

Anyways, I got it home and ran it into a couple trees, flopped it on its side, ya know? The usual.

So I'm turning around to park the bitch once we got it flopped back up, and the fawkin tire, rim, hub, rotor, everything come completely off the spindle. The bearings were fawked. I guess that's what all the grinding and whatnot was from when I took it for a lil spin down the road. So now I have this pile of fawk sittin in the backyard with no way to move it. Oh, and this is on a Sunday at my parents place in a nice neighborhood (- the nice neighbors). And I had to be back to work on Monday 250 miles away. So I left it.

Came back the following weekend and had my buddy who owns and excavatin company come over with his backhoe and we basically just yanked the engine out of the front of the fawker. I torched the clip off and cut ever wire and hose hooked to the engine. I took out what I needed from the sploder, (computer, pedals & brackets, slave cylinder & resevoir for clutch, etc.) and kept the wiring harness for the trans. Then we basically hooked a chain to the engine and to the bucket on the backhoe and forcefully removed it, without a care in the world bout the sploder, which was gettin scrapped.

Got the engine and trans out, then we started thinkin how we were gonna get an engineless and 1/4 wheeless sploder on the trailer....

Yup, as you can see, we didn't have to think about it very long. Wish I had some better pics, but you get the picture.

So I got done what I wanted that weekend about a month ago, and am goin back in a week and plan on havin the bitch up in the barn on jackstands gettin the auto trans. out along with all the stock suspension and axles, basically everything from the frame down. Should be fun. I'll document that process much better. I'm also planning on beginning the 5-speed swap at that point. I'm moving back home with my parents...(grrrrr!, yea, it's the suck big time, but I gotta go back to school for my paramedic license)....anyways, I'll have a lot more time to work on it and shit.

More pics comin soon. Promise.

Well, after a long weekend, I got the lift kit off the Ranger along with the tires and axles and sold them to a couple of really cool cats here in Port Huron who promised me they'd put muh old shit to good use just as I did.

Had to do all the pulling while it was up on a trailer since my old man didn't want muh Ranger parked up on blocks in his barn so it now is resting on his trailer....waiting for the Dana 60s and 42s......heres a couple pics of it as she sits now......IDK......kinda looks naked to me.

Here the old bitch is in all her glory......

Side shots lookin down the body with the 44s I got sittin next to it for height referance. I want to try and keep my hood below 66", but running 40" + sized meat, I know it'll be difficult.....plan on pushing the axle ahead and doin some major fender trimmming to get them to run alright with a relatively low C.O.G......

Couple pics of the rearend saggy ass leaves and my spare engine and the 5 speed I'm gonna put in her.....Rear is prolly gonna end up gettin 4 linked. I plan on keeping the bed until it is absolutley trashed....then maybe flatbeddin it or tubin it out or something....

Pic of under the truck with my ultra safe, high class cribbing method to hold the bitch up......please, nobody try this. I do not condone this.....blah blah blah.....I know it's not the safest and whatnot, but nobody walks around the thing and I'm pretty much the only one who's workin on the thing.

It's slow.....but it's coming along.....did I mention it's slow going?

Here's another shot of the front and rear axles I picked up that are goin under the bitch...

Dana 60 kingpin from an 87 F350.

I'mma redo the brakes on it, (new rotors, pads n possibly calipers. Also plan on settin up a hi steer, hydro assist setup as well. Eventually I'll regear fom the 4.10s in it to 5.38s and swap in Detroits. But thata all takes $$$$.....something that I never seem to come across much of if you havn't been able to tell by the pics.....Oh well, wheelin on the cheap is fun too! Hell, with the doubler I want to do, 4.10s might just be alright with 40"+ hawgs. IDK....we'll see

GM 14 bolt -w- 3.73s on the 10.5" ring gear

Either way I'mma have to regear this one...If I can find someone who wants to buy / trade this for a Sterling 10.25, that's be awesome, but if not, I'll run it. I plan on doin a disc brake swap eventually along with a 1410 yoke swap irregrdless of what rearend I end up with.

Hope everyone likes and hopefully won't bitch about an update with no pics.

Comments/suggestions/criticism is always wanted AND appreciated.....

Thats how I strip all my parts trucks. Just keep it on the trailer. Dont have to fight with it getting it loaded with out axles later.

The brakes on that D60 dont look to bad.....

Yea, it was a lot easier than I though it would be. And it's actually relatively safe if you don't tip the truck off the stands. Not that I did that or anything.....lol......And you have to make sure that the load of the truck is evenly distributed on the deck of the trailer. I had a couple times that it was all sort of towards one spot on the trailer and the trailer deck boards were bowing pretty good. Workin on it though, it's like the trucks on a big bench that you can move around wherever you want. I actually kind of like it. If it were a perfect world, I'd have a trailer like this....

http://www.johnsontrailerco.com/5_ton_equipment_102.php

18-20' long. 102 inches wide with drive over fenders. stake pockets on the sides for side racks. It's a nice trailer, but for $3500-$4500? That's a lot of money.....

Anyways, more updates to come in a couple weeks.

well..

Well if holding your battery down with a bungee cord is wrong I don't want to be right:icon_rofl:

BIG UPDATE! 8 YEARS LATER! BIG UPDATE!

Yea, So I decided what the hell tonite when I got in from cleaning up my garage and shop, staring at this pile of shit, contemplating sending it to the scrap yard. I came inside and figured I'd update ya'll on where I'm at with all of this, almost a decade later!

I'm also gonna see what advice and pointers you guys might give, on what direction to take with this project. A lot of time has passed and things have changed, but I still never seem to have the time to wrench on this junk, and when I do, I never seem to have the money.

I still have the Ranger, and honest to god, have made such little progress, it's pathetic. Lol. Ive moved halfway across the country a few years back and believe it or not, drug the chassis carcass with me.

It still is just open frame rails. Nothing has really been done to the truck since 2008. I focused on getting my career in gear over the past few years. That has taken me all over the place, and has made it difficult to work on my junk. Not to mention, the past few years, my focus has been on travelling, women, my job, getting a small construction business up and rolling, setting up a decent shop and getting an alright tool collection set up, and this has taken a backburner spot.

But I finally feel that I'm in a spot where I can dedicate a decent amount of time to this and finally have something wheelable.

Anyways, on to the rig.

Like I said, nothing has really changed. The general plan, to run hydro steer, coilovered 1 tons on 42s, mounted on recentered 16.5" beadlocks with linked suspension up front and possibly rear is still basically the same. I have most of the components, minus the hydro steer setup.

The motor however, may very well be getting swapped out. Im not sure I want to stay with the 4.0. It also hasnt ran in 8 years, the fuel tank is out of it, along with the fuel pump. I remember after the truck had sat for a year or so, some squirrels had built a nest in the intake tube also, so Im not sure if the inside of the engine is screwed up as well. I may try and get it running though and see how it is and just end up keeping it as is. We'll see.

My other option.......I have a 95 F150 with a rotted frame that needs a transmission, that I am considering hacking up and parting out, that may donate its 302 fuel injected engine to this, as the engine runs really good in the F150. The AC works as well in the F150, so I may have to try and retrofit that stuff into the Ranger. We'll see.

Ill add pics in the next few days....Maybe this will keep someone entertained!
