Under the rail bedliners(spreading oil on the bed before installation)

Ok I have heard all the problems people say they have with these type of bedliners. Rust and corrosion begin to form after a couple years due to water build up. I have recently purchased a ranger and they are giving me a free bedliner. I brought up the rust thing tomy agent and he said that he has heard that also. He said that though it could happen he has not seen it often on any of his customers trucks after the bedliner has been removed.

He than told me that if it concerns me that he has a customer that has bought trucks from him for years. He said the guy is anal about the appearance of his vehicles. He said this customer spreads motor oil on the bed of his truck before the bedliner is installed. He has never had any rust problems on the bed whatsoever.

I definitely do not want a spray a liner. I dont care how durable it is I dont like the fact that it is permanently bonded to the bed. What I want to know is if anyone has used the method of spreading oil on the bed of their trucks. Does it help? or does it make things worse? If its a waste of time I may just get a nice rubber mat that I can remove whenever I want and let Ford keep the bedliner. I really dont wantto deal with rust anytime soon.

the oil may keep it from rusting but the bedliner will still rub the paint off. i have the rubber mat in my truck, been in there for a year and the box still looks new under it. i take mine up every couple months and wash under it cause i use my truck for work.

They rub the paint off, but they also rub any rust off. I have had mine in for 6-7 years, still shiny bare metal under there when I had the liner out last fall.

The only real problem with my over the rail liner is it blew out once, the truck slowed down and a heard a "WHOOSH" thru my slider window. A quick scan of my mirrors revealed my bedliner gracefully gliding into a cornfield... luckily they had a large grass waterway along side the fence so it didn't hurt the corn any.

Now I have it bolted in.:icon_thumby:

My dad has an under the rail liner, no such problems with it... but I nabbed mine out of a parts truck so I don't have a lot of $$ in it.

Hmmm i don't know much about these liners, (i use a neoprene insert) but spreading motor oil in my eyes would only make it "sticky" (not sticky to the liner but stickey to airbourne particles), and if you go offroading you will definatly be sure to collect alot of dirt and dust!!! just an observation... But sorry i can't contribute to the liner..

Agreed, oil will just collect all the dirt & dust under there, creating a huge mess (and will probably abrade through the metal quicker too).

FWIW, I just pulled the bedliner out of mine after 14 years, and there was very little rust under there. The paint (as expected) was worn off in many areas, but as said, the rust isn't able to form where the liner constantly rubs. I'm also in arid So Calif though too.

I'm going to a spray or painted-on liner though, the plastic liners rattle, and they also consume a fairly significant bit of space in the bed too.

Used oil works great on frames though, ask any old farmer they used to spray/ paint the frames of there trucks about 3 times a year and never have rust issues as the oil blocks the water, and salty water/ rust.

What about the dualliner? It's a thick rubber mat with hard sides that fit under the rails.

I would recommend applying a HEAVY coat of buff off type car wax and installing the bed liner over it.

I was thinking about that. They are pretty expensive though. I told my dealer to get the bed liner. They wont let you take it unless they install it first. He said it would scratch the bed up if I removed it, so I told he I was going to buy something else.
