Ok....

Past couple of days ive been making my mud truck "road worthy" (or as road worthy as a 76 F250 can be). I took the big blocks out and installed some more sane 4 inchers with some 33in tires).

Anyways....

My ol lady has been running the F150 to work (i prefer it anyways with our wonderful road commision thats out here), so im without a 4x4, reason i decdided to do this.

Its a 76 F250 with a 390/4sp/D60 front axle (I believe).

Tonite on its first trial run in its new life i took it out and got it stuck at the end of the road (the didnt plow the whole thing, just the left and right portions).

I get out, lock the hubs in, throw the lever in and start on the gas. I crawl out of it but my front end hits the dry pavement and i hear this awful friggin noise. I get out and look and dont see anything visably broken so i unlock the hubs and proceed home.

Its a hard noise to explain, but its like a mix between a grinding and whirring noise....my 4wd still seems to work so i dont know if its a hub that is close to blowing....or something else?? It seems to not be so noticiable at 55mph....but its still there, you can hear it over the Glasspacked 390.

Help???

Dustin

Sorry, ive never had a problem out of a 4wd system before...what else you guys need?

Its got manual hubs...im assuming warn??? There are no markings (left) on them, and they were on there when i bought the truck.

Stupid question.......arethe axle's geared the same with teh same size tires. Im only saying that because in an old mud truck axles may have been swapped around and whatnot before you even got it. if you only used it in the mud you may have never noticed before with all the slippage....... you didnt have the wheel cranked over on the locks did you when the front hit the pavement
:icon_confused:

No, the wheels wernt no where near the locks when i hit the pavement, they were barely turned.

Im not sure what the axle ratios are....i know i put a new (used) set of 33's all on 4 wheels (I used to run 38's in the mud). I was told when i got the truck it had 4.10's front and rear, but i never confirmed this.

I guess i can jack it up and count the revolutions....if the axles were different ratios do you think i screwed anything up?

im going to say either t-case, hubs, or front pig. does it make the noise with the hubs locked and t-case in 2wd? what about the other way around?

what transfer case would be in that generation of truck anyway?

I believe its a NP 205, or NP208, one of those.

I went out eariler and locked it in and put it in 4, the wheels all drove and the noise was reduced greatly. I unlocked the hubs and it came back as loud as before...

those are gear driven cases...so it could still be something in the case.

id isolate the noise by pulling the front driveline and driving first with the case in 4wd w/hubs unlocked, then with the case in 2wd w/hubs locked. this should tell you if its in the axle or t-case.

Well i woke up at 6AM and couldnt go back to sleep...decided togo out and try and figure this out....

I unlocked the hubs, like you said, and ran it in 4, the noise was loud, very loud.

When i locked the hubs and ran it in 4wd the noise quiteted down, you could still hear it but not as bad, so i unlocked the hubs and ran it in 2 and the noise was there, very loud.

Seems like the noise is there with the hubs unlocked and the tcase in 2???

A buddy of mine said it might possibly be an axle bearing??

Dustin

if the noise is there with the hubs unlocked and tcase in 2wd then that rules out the front driveline and t-case internals (could still be main shaft bearings). it'll be somewhere in the engine/transmission/transfer case/rear axle. if the noise is speed related than that rules out the engine.

axle bearings can certainly cause a growel...and if the truck has been sitting for an extended period of time, it could have developed flat spots on the rollers. try jacking the truck up and turning the rear wheels by hand. feel for any roughness or bumps while the wheel is turning.

A U joint wouldnt make that much noise would it?

Reason im wondering....i crawled under it and the joints on the front driveshaft have a hellacous amount of slop....

Dustin

If it does it with the hubs unlocked and T-case in neutral it won't be the joints in the front shaft since they aren't moving.

I don't think Fords had the 208 then. It should be a 203 or 205 (one is divorced, but I can't remember which). I had a 76 F-100 with a 360/T-18 with a Dana 20 behind it. Also I think the F-250s had 8 lug HD D44s.

The 203 is full time (4 hi on road, 4 hi lock, 4 low on road, 4 low lock) the 205 is the normal 2 hi, 4 hi lock, 4 low lock. If it was a 203 with 2wd, it migh have had a 2hi conversion kit installed that could be messed up.

It should be a 205 I've never seen a 203 that was divorced. It has a 60 rear, Id say its got a broken spider gear or chipped tooth on a gear. Or possibly if it was a mud truck, Is the rear end welded? If it is id say you broke an axle shaft.

No, the rear end is not welded but it does have a factory limited slip which actually still works.

Ill pull the diff covers tomorrow, its going to be 10* today and i dont have a heated garage.

Dustin
