hey guys i just found more problems with my ranger. the u-joints in the d28 are worn to shit and i was wondering about how much new ones cost.

thanks in advance

20-30$ a piece, or at least thats what they are here in Canada. Actually more expensive than Dana 35 joints 'round these parts. Remember you need 3 for the front of your TTB.

i got mine for 20$ a pop and i did them myself.

Yeah, the parts price is fairly low. Actually getting them out is the fun part.

lol mine came apart easy.:icon_twisted:

I didn't even mean getting them out of the shafts. I meant everything else you have to take apart just to get to them.

it aint that hard i took mine apart today to check them and it only took me 10 to 15 min. now i just gota change them

I've gotta get my right front ones replaced soon. Sadly, I don't have the space, tools, or confidence to do it.

The good news is that my mechanic says it will be $300. I'm due for a NH state inspection so my Ranger will be in shop. He might as well do them.

The down side is that I'll be driving his shop loaner (a '94 S10).

I will tell you the flip side of u-joint removal........try 20000 lbs of force (actually had a gauge on the press) and a torch, then the u-joint releasing sounding like a gun shot and making me crap my pants.....and the yoke ears being bent in slightly.

The most difficult part of the job has got to be seperating the spindle from the knuckle.
That is, seperating it without destroying it. By the second or third d28 rebuild, I had enough, and found an adaptor made by Bluepoint. It allows a big boy 6lb slide hammer to be attached to the spindle. It works much faster and more important it will not damage parts like an air hammer will. If you do the job as outlined in the FSM, be sure replace the ball joints. All four. It would be a bummer to have to go back and essentaly do the job over to get to them.

I always use a coal chisel around the edge of the spindle flange. If you do it in a few places it doesnt mushroom the edge too bad....but you still have to grind off the dents before you reassemble.....just use alot of antiseaze before you put it back together.
