I have a 92 ranger and the steering rag joints are showing there age. I just replaced the lower column bearing which I seen LMC had and now i want to upgrade/repair this shaft. I would like to find a double U-joint style steering shaft. I heard some aerostars or other rangers came with them thru the years? Anyone know what RBV i can get one from that will fit right in?

My 91 ranger is a U joint steering shaft...no rag joint.

modify a stock aerostar setup works great with the 1st gens.

depending on what specific setup yours is oem will dictate what combo is best to use.

there are early and later aerostar setups, sometimes they need to be combined to be ideal for a given situation.

Yessir!

Too bad it has worn out where the steering extension goes into it for my body lift...clunks like a bastard

Thanks guys, I hear some people use XJ shaft and mod them slightly. I'll give it a try is see what I come up with. Mine is ok at best, lots of tears in the rubber so it needs replacing soon. Mine is rubber on both ends lots of cracks. I'll try to post some pics too.

The one in my 94 is a double U-joint. I got it from a 91 Explorer.

Judging by this thread, 1991 RBVs are the only ones that came with 2-u-joint steering column shafts?

Did you figure that one out all by yourself? :icon_rofl:

But seriously folks, I checked one of the guys at works '91 Ex, he too has the double u-joint.

Thats interesting 91's only, huh. I'll keep that in mind as well.

Is that really necessary? I simply wanted to confirm both for the others here, as well as before I go junkyard hopping for one myself, being that my '90 has an odd one-of-each-joint shaft

they vary....most explorers have good shafts if you find a low mile one...they get loose for some reason sonner then later..

modding jeep or aero shafts is good for custom applications or body lifts.

swapping in an explorer unit is good too, but for some reason they are usually shitty....
