I have to replace the u-joint on the driver side... now if i was to take off the shaft and the u joints, could i still drive around with it off? Because I will not be able to take out the u joint till monday because I do not have a vise or a press to press the new one in. I will not be using 4x4. If I can take the U-joint and shaft off now then thats what ill do and I can keep booting around. Also what tools will i need to take the shaft off?

I do not , never without a 4x4 drive shaft out....from what I see, I see no problem for driving without a drive shaft

vise grip to get out circlip

driveshaft or axleshaft?

I you are removing a front axle or drive shaft from the 4x4 system for a U-joint replacement then you will be fine. Just make sure the other hub is unlocked or you will end up with fluid everywhere. You may still lose a good bit of fluid if you remove an axle shaft.

If you want to remove the rear drive shaft and try to drive around, I recommend that be left for emergencies only.

The differential side of the axle shaft keeps the differential fluid in the differential. If you remove the shaft, oil will drain out. The diff uses about 2.5 qts of oil, do you want that pouring from the truck as you drive down the road? Or on your driveway? Or on the bottom of your engine/transmission?

I wouldn't take the shaft out until you can repair it.

All you need to change a u/j is a screwdriver, two rocks and a decent sized hammer.

I'd like to see this done and a video of it.

I can see that. I bet if I didn't have better things to do with my time, I could do it.
