I have a twin turbo setup on a 93 5.0 motor. The truck runs strong but I can't put a hood on it. The kit places the passenger side turbo almost where the Alternator is. To "Fix" this issue the previous owner decided to build 3" risers for the turbo's which places them half way out of the hood.

So far I had decided a few possible solutions.

1) I can try to relocate the alternator. Which is what I really want to do since I have no A/C or smog pump. Low mount the alternator would be the cleanest idea.

2) I can get new shorty style headers and have them cut and modified into turbo manifolds which would allow me to place the turbo away from the alternator. Then the driver side gets too close to master cylinder unless I'm mistaken.

3) A body lift. NOT something I want to do since I was hoping to lower it a little. The truck is a 4x4 originally but most of the 4x4 is long gone. The truck currently has a lift and 31x10.50 tires and with the power it puts out pressing the gas pedal can be scary. At 45 mph slaming the gas pedal to the floor makes the truck want to go sideways.:icon_surprised:

I'm not a welder nor am I good at fabbing stuff up. I'm a perfectionist and the few things I tried to fab didn't turn out as nice as I wanted so I pay the pros to do it now. Is there a company that makes a low mount kit for the 5.0 motors? I tried checking with Summit, AMP Performance and March but no luck so far.

I'd love to see some pictures.
Is it possible to put a cowl or scoop on the hood? Otherwise relocating the alternator sounds like the best idea. I don't think a body lift on a suspension lowered truck would look right.

why cant you just cut the hood. and put a hood scoop over it. seems like the simplest choice..

1. alternator relocation would suck.
2. too much money
3. you dont want to.

so i say custom hood.

You can actually bolt the alt in place of the smog pump, its not a direct bolt in, some mods are needed, but I believe its doable...

currently the turbo's are off the truck and stock headers are on so even if I posted pics right now it would be of the truck with a 5.0 swap and a front mount innercooler. Although it would only take a couple hours to swap them back on. The turbos sit far enough to the side that I would have to fab a cowl hood almost as wide as the engine bay. Also heat from the turbo and the fiberglass wouldn't work well together.

Currently the truck is at a buddies house so I can work on it. Turbos are off so I can figure out the placement issue. They turbos are also ebay junk so I'm shopping for replacements. So far looks like a set of AGP Turbo Delta 44 since I can pick the pair up for about 1800. The Garretts I was looking at are $2200 a pair and the B&W are $2400 a pair.

I have to pull the trans this week to fix a leak from the front pump area. Hopefully nothing too serious. I have a very long list of things to do to it. If I show picks it will be for the sole purpose of before and after. It looks rough now but a few thousand into body and engine should help.

What turbos do you have now?

The turbos on it now are "no-name" eBay specials from China. The only thing on them is .43 A/R. That is why I'm going with new turbos. There are a pair of Air Research turbo's that come with the truck but they need rebuild. For the price to have them rebuilt I can get new ones for a little more that are larger.

Have you thought about remote mounting the turbos? They would take the place of your mufflers if you are running dual exhaust that's even better. Lower engine temp, turbo temp, no hood clearance issues, and they give it a complet sleeper look when you look under the hood. The bad thing is you need an electric oil pump to feed the turbos.

never thought about that. Trouble is I have the flowmasters dumping under the cab. I guess I could run the exhaust a little further back for the turbo's.

And to the guy in the back that says this post is worthless without pics.....I will take them tomorrow to show the 5.0 and the truck but the turbos have been pulled so I can replace them and put a hood on it to deter theft. I will take the pics of the turbos and the turbo manifolds to show I have it and the front mount is still on the truck so I could show that. Just to warn everyone the truck looks like crap.

I picked it up Friday and haven't bought anything for it yet. I have another motor at the machine shop I have to pick up for my 10 second car. Funds are being diverted to the Ranger but I have prior obligations to my car that need to be paid first. Then the Ranger goes to paint and body then the turbo's will be replaced with bigger and better ones along with a fuel system capable of keep up to the demand of twins running 20 lbs of boost.

FYI my car will be running 35 lbs this time around. I was at 22 on the last turbo.

so...

how's those pics coming? :D

I say rear mount turbos.

You need a pump to scavange the turbos, not feed oil to them.

I don't think the guy in the back is doubting you by asking for pics...We just like to look at pics...:icon_thumby:
