turn a 4x4 exploper trans into a two wheel trans

i have a 1999 explorer with a bad engine I bot a 2000 explorer with a good engine and trans but it is 4 wheel drive can I change the out put shaft and its houseing . note only 50k on it i also have the ecm can anyone help thx jay
 
yes....as long as the 2wd stuff is not damaged

likely the trans shop may swap it free if you let them have the 4x4 parts and all else is good
 
thx for the in put if I went to pick your part and pulled the tail shaft and housing could i do it my self ???? and watt sould I look for ps i want to keep the other 4x2 trans intacked again thx for the HELP. JAY
 
The "tail shaft" that you are referring to requires complete disassembly of the transmission to remove. With the proper tools and enough time any decent mechanic could figure out how to do it. You have to weigh it out here. You have the cost of the mainshaft, tail housing, and any other parts you may need by the time you're done and don't forget the time invested. Or you have the cost of just buying a good used transmission. If it were me i'd just throw together a transmission but then again I have a work bench that I built just for working on Mazda transmissions.
