I would like any advice on turboing 2 Rangers one my own 99 3.0 V6 Ranger XLT the other a 03 2.3 I4 Ranger. I know the earlier Lima 4cyl would be the better engine for this but I'm stuck with the Duratec I4 and for the Vulcan 3.0 V6 I'm not sure. Both trucks are getting fully restored I'm not even sure about doing a turbo job on the 99 but definitely want to turbo the 03. Also I might be buying a friend a 2000 Ranger XLT but don't know what he would want done to it.

So would anyone have any ideas?

It's gonna be easier & cheaper to turbo the 2.3.

What would be cooler though imo.. would be to get a smaller supercharger from a 4cyl car for the 2.3. There's been a few factory supercharged 4cyls over the years.. Cobalt ss and Cooper s are the two that immideately come to mind.. I think a Mercedes or two as well. Would require more Fab work than a turbo though.

But are there parts like forged pistons and rods for the Duratec? I know the Lima 2.3 was meant to be turboed because I definitely want to build both engines up the 2.3 and 3.0 if I decide on the V6 I would rather not cheap out because I want reliable.

Forged parts are available for the duratec, and since it's a much more popular motor to do performance-y things with.. nice parts are much less $$$ than 3.0 stuff

Seems like a bone stock 2.3 can deal with 10-11psi as long as it's intercooled and has a good tune. That would give you around another 110-115hp and put you pretty close to where a stock clutch will start to slip. I'm unsure how much torque those manuals are rated to hold but you'd likely be pretty close to the safe limit there as well.

For what it's worth, the base engine for the 2.3 Ecoboost is a Duratec engine. I wouldn't want to go to 270 or 310 horsepower on an engine that hasn't been beefed up for it but it shows you what you can get out of the little guy. And that's a factory engine designed to be on the road. Just imagine what the race crowd has done to them.

Where would I be able to get parts like a turbo manifold? Also I forgot to say my 99 V6 is a 5 speed the 03 2.3 is an auto.

Manifolds for the 3.0 aren't gonna come 'off the shelf' anywhere im willing to bet.. but ebay will have options for the 2.3.

3.0 has issues with pre-ignition stock; boost is only going to make that worse. Plan on premium gas and maybe water injection if you want to add any amount of pressure.

Ecoboost might have started with Duratech 3.0, but the direct injection makes it whole different critter.

Yeah that's what I figured with the Vulcan 3.0. With the 2.3 what do I need to change the oil weight to with boost?

Whatever the manual calls for will do just fine.

As Don said though.. either motor is gonna need at least 91 octane once you slap a snail on it.

This guy put a turbo on a stock duratech then dropped it in a falcon ute with good results.
