Welcome to TRS :)

Bookmark this page: https://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/index.shtml

On above page click on "Engines...." section

Look at Turbo section, some good reading to maybe answer some questions you have right off the bat
But feel free to ask more question

And yes, several members here have added turbos to the 2.3l Lima engine, I am not one however :)

You have a 2.3l SOHC Lima engine, AKA "Pinto" engine, first used in a Ford Pinto in 1974, last used in a 1997 Ranger
But in 1998-2001 Rangers, Ford "stroked" the 2.3l to make it a 2.5l SOHC

The Lima engines are very reliable, "built like a tank", but because of this they did have a lower power to weight ratio
And because of this they are a good candidate for a turbo :)

In mid-2001 Rangers got a 2.3l DOHC Duratec engine, no relation to the 2.3l Lima, but it can be confusing if you do a search using "Ranger 2.3l"....................because there were two different 2.3l engines used in Rangers

It's a fairly easy conversion if you find a turbo coupe in a junkyard just yank the whole head, intake, exhaust, and turbo. Everything will bolt on. There are also alot of aftermarket kits and parts available for the 2.3 lima.

Yeah, that...

On an '86 it should be a pretty easy swap, repin the stock harness and add the VAM to the stock harness, put in the turbo computer, bolt in a turbocoupe engine, redo exhaust... Of course I'm paraphrasing and it's more than that in mostly little stuff. Doing it now I could do the swap in a weekend but the first time took me a month and a half... and that was taking shortcuts... but I didn't have the thing at my house and I did it in the winter and there were some catches that I didn't understand correctly.
