Yes eventually you will break things in the drive line when you add power, but people break things 4 wheeling too, along with added load from larger tires & lifts etc. Rangers were not designed & built to do some of that type of off-roading that many use their Ranger for, but the trucks do it quite well. My rear end center section wore the pin hole almost completely out while the truck was totally stock, I replaced it with a trac-loc posi unit as the cost was almost identical to the open diff carrier. As for sugar coating a turd, as you put it, it's pretty nice to take a $4-6K Ranger head to the track and commence beating up on a $20-$25K "Muscle Car" all day long. I have got to say from my experience these little 3.0's are tough & can take 18psi with a good tune for a long time. Of course this isn't the most engine mod friendly Ranger site, most will tell you to leave it stock, for some that is fine, for those with a passion for something different it's just that much more fuel for the fire to mod. As for the original posters question regarding a SC or turbo, M90 & 112 SC generate a ton of heat, and Stmitch is dead on about a Turbo being totally custom, you need to do your homework & you need some really good fabrication skills as everything will be custom. As for a turbo platform its hard to beat a 2.3 on 25+ psi of boost, they will scream & there are a ton of forged parts available for building a strong motor. Good, strong parts for a 3.0 are very hard to come by & expensive.
