turbo on a 4.0 ohv

it depends on how much boost you plan on running. ive always like the turbos off the 4g63 engines. but the 1st gen probes have decent turbos. also the 1st gen 300zxs have garett turbos and have been know to hanlde a decent amount of boost. other than that im not sure.

what model and years do the good turbos come on im going to the yard and i dont want to be there forever even tho i end up spending half the day there its like fun r us

87-92 supra turbo... about a 56mm or so turbo good for 230-375 hp easy. can rebuild to 57mm and flow 450hp

As previously stated, the Garrett/AiResearch T3 is a solid, dependable unit that is quite easy to come by in the scrapyards. Depending on the year and model of the vehicle it comes off of, it's good for about 10-12 psi and should last for a long time.

The only drawback I've discovered with the T3 is turbo lag. On my non-intercooled OM617 Benz, it's a slug until it starts to build boost at around 2500 RPMs. Once it gets spinning, all you can do is hold on and try to point it in the right direction. This is the biggest complaint TD Benz owners have about the T3.

There is another unit, the KKK26 (also OEM on the OM617 for certain model years) that doesn't suffer from the dreaded turbo lag nearly as bad as the T3. It's good for 15+ psi in the right trim, but does best (like the T3) in the neighborhood of 10-12. It starts to spool nearly right off idle and gives a nice boost to bottom-end torque. After I rebuild my injectors with some Fratelli nozzles and tweak the pump a little bit, I'll be looking to replace the T3 with a K26. On an OHV 4.0 (with it's pancake-flat torque curve), a K26 would be ideal. good luck with whatever you choose:icon_thumby:

im still wandering if i should go with an intercooler and how would i even begin to start collecting parts for a turbo like what parts do i need

If you keep it under 10 psi you can get by without a intercooler.

Have you read the FAQ at the top? While it relates mostly to a 2.3, it covers just about everythig you will need to know. Did you also read the other two threads that I posted for you? These are turbo installs on a 4.0.

You need to come up with a plan for what you want to do. Are you planning on just having a daily driver with a little more power or are you planning on making a race car? You can swap a turbo on for next to no money or you can spend big dollars. Remember big power, dependablity and low budget usually do not go hand in hand. What exactly do you want out of your vehicle?

i built my kit for a total of about 150$ worth of parts. Its not that great of a kit but its held up for over a year of daily driving. I only have used FPR mods to richen the AFRs. A T3 works but is in the small side for a 4L dispacement. however the turbo spools up wicked quick and you have full boost before 2000. I pulled my T3 off of an early 80s turbo dodge. It has the .48 ar exhaust housing. You would be better off finding a T3 with a .68 ar turbine scroll. I plan to redo the hotside eventually if I even keep the rig and or this motor. I estimated a pick up of 100 ftlbs adn only 40 hp increase over stock non intercooled @ 5lbs of boost. If i keep the turbo 4.0 Ill upgrade to slightly larger turbo and go intercooled along with proper tuning.
heres the dyno video

parts needed:
exhaust manifold, turbo, wastegate and plumbing, downpipe, exhaust pipes, air filter, intake piping, upgraded maf, maybe larger throttle body, intercooler, more intake piping, larger injectors, upgraded fuel pump, boost controller, boost gauge, wideband a/f meter, tuning via megasquirt or custom flash, 8.8 or better rear diff, upgraded brakes. that should do it for the most part, others will chime in what i missed.

Dont need manifolds you can use the stock cast iron manifolds. You can flip them or you can leave them as is and U turd ther exhaust like copykat did. If you get a T3 turbo you wouldnt need a wastegate as most T3s come with internal gates, I have used my stock MAf but wouldnt hurt ot upgrade if going for larger boost levels. Theres no reason for a larger throttle boost dosent care how did the hole is. Fuel pump MAY be ok? Hrd to say theres alot of variabled there and again it depends on the boost levels. However a bigger pump cant hurt and is a great insurance plan. At low boost levels 19lb injectors at a higher fuel pressure may be fine but its nto a bad idea to step up a size or two as you can find injectors for cheap. Try looking for thunderbird SCs in the yards as they have 30lb injectors as well as lincoln mark 8s with the 32v 4.6 have 24#ers. You can handle it all with an FMU but a stand alone or a system like the Moates quarterhorse would be best to add fuel and control timing thru the ecu. You don't need a different diff and or trans and or upgraded brakes. You also dont need a bov. I have a bov but currently the bov is unplugged and its not big deal. Its nice to have a bov on a manual apliction and on an auto its not really necesary at all.

i wouldnt recommend doing a turbo without an intercooler. while it is okay if ur not boosting past 10 psi. i dont like the fact that you will be forcing hot air into the engine. this will make detonation more of a problem. while you do get quicker boost response in theory. i can honestly say after driving and tuning many turbo cars, ones without intercoolers are not as quick to respond as ones with. plus, whats the point of a turbo if your only gonna boost 8-9 psi??? it willv take a little bit more piping, and more modification. buts its the one thing i would invest in.

i agree my air temps are probally horrible. You can pick up intercoolers for dirt cheap as well. All you really need is a sizeable turbo with an internal gate, oi lines and fittings, some pipe of different bends and sizes, a turbo flange, couplers and clamps. Then either a fmu or proper tuning equiptment such as tuner and a wideabnd to track AFRs. if boosting under 5lbs I doubt larger injectors and a puimp is necesary but wouldnt hurt to have. A different maf would be great just make sure to nail the MAF transfer function in the tune or you will be pulling your hair out trying to get the truck to run right. A bov isnt necesary buit also can't hurt. Also putting a turbo on for only 5-10 lbs can help. It turned my NA slug of a 4.0 into a little more torquey wind up down low which helps on the hills and passing......

A turbo off of a 1981-1983 280zx turbo, or a 84-86 300zx turbo is a t3 60ar compressor 63 ar turbine, t3 flange. Internal gate at about 5-7 psi. I just pulled one off of my 280zx. I was thinking about using it on my 4.0 but i need new heads lol. It kind of chokes out at about 5000 rpm on the 280zx. It would probably provide near instant boost on the 4.0 and pull up to about 4k rpms. As long as you kept the rpms below 4500 should last a very long time I would think. The t3 is good for about 250-275whp on the 280zx and 300zx. More on the 4.0 ohv i would think.

Boost actually comes on faster without an inter cooler due to pipe length. If i were to do it cheap I would just run a 2" up pipe to the turbo and leave the manifolds in the stock positions. Use 2" intercooler pipe. 2.5" exhaust pipe. Should be good for 200whp and a good amount of tq.
