turbo my 93 ranger?

i got a 93 ranger 3.0 and i want to put a t3/t4 with intercooler, bov, waste gate, boost controller. but i hear that the rangers burn valves and have leaking head gasket problems just on stock motors? buddy told me some better gaskets and some ARP head studs would probably fix the problem but i dont really want to do much more than slap a turbo on and go :headbang: whats your 2 cents?

Seeing as how a proper turbo setup that gives any kind of appreciable boost pretty much requires shortened rods and forged internals to not blow the engine to bits as soon as you start building boost, I think this may be your optimum setup.

If you can't afford a Toro, a hair dryer can be subtituted, but you need to run a smaller intake tube and a bigger CAC.


That's on a Ford 4.6L, but it should work equally well on your 3.0.

How many bone stock gas engines have you seen take more than 5 lbs of boost without grenading?

I've seen one that lasted more than a few minutes, and it is not a pretty sight now. While my statement may have not been litterally true, the point I was trying to make there is "Slap a turbo on and go" as the OP said, and the engine will give out sooner rather than later.

It's been done quite a lot. The key is a good tune. I never said slapping it on and going should be done. You can boost nearly any stock engine without hurting it.

It doesn't matter anyways, the OP will never do it, nobody that ever asks these questions does.
 
im real interested in doing it. dont know how to tune a turbo though. could use some help there. i work for a factory motocross team but dont have too much experience with cars
 
Most motors can handle a little boost with stock internals. The problems usually happen when the nut behind the wheel ignores what you told them about do NOT adjust the boost controller above seven pounds. boost is unfortunately very addictive. Whoosh, whistle, pop.
 
so 7lbs is the magic number? does 7 feel pretty good power wise?
 
Punching seven lbs of boost on a 3.0 into a simple turbo calculator should put it around 210 hp peak, under ideal conditions. Your results may vary.

This would put it on par with the SOHC 4.0, for sake of comparison.

Six pounds of boost will feel pretty good. Human nature being what it is however, sooner or later curiosity gets the better of you and the boost controller gets turned up and the parts fly out in all directions.
