I've been doing a swap in a 1988 4x4 2.3 ranger. I'll almost done with it and i noticed that the drain bolt is sitting on the axle beam. Which pan im i supposed to use beside the 4x4 pan cause its different pan gasket?

what year engine is it, and did your stock engine have a steel or aluminum pan? sometime in '86 they changed from the rear main cap having a "trough" in it for the oil pan gasket to having a smooth surface on it. on mine I wanted to use the aluminum pan, I had to fill in the "trough" with JB weld (note, use JB Quick not the normal and in the winter it takes FOR FRIGGIN EVER to set...) and change the front seal housing to the new style, along with drilling out the rear outer holes in the pan to 5/16" from 1/4", the stock turbocoupe oil pump didn't fit in the stock pan either, so I changed that, it's only a couple bolts and a nut if I remember right

Its 86 tbird and i read the post about the jb weld in the ranger pan. But i was scaired to use it. So it hasnt leaked yet? I saw your in salem me to how much hp in you ranger?

I'm all stock, so I assume around 170hp unless I put premium in it and unplug the boost controller in which case it would be in the 220 range I think. Send me a PM or email (click on my name then contact info for email) and I'll give you my cell number, if you are working on it tomorrow I might be able to stop over and lend a hand, bring mine over for reference... I need to take it out for a drive anyway, should probably check the coolant out before it freezes too...

edit:
no leak so far, at least nothing significant from that area, there are several others, but not in the rear main area :). Depending on how far you are in the swap I could give some hints on things I would do differently if I had the chance
