i have a 88 ranger and i would like to know what i can do to improve horse, torque, and gas mpg. (not worried about mpg so much) the main things im wondering about is preformance injectors, roller rockers. anyone can help that would be awsome. oh and i read that 2.9 and 4.0 have the same lifter ratio 1.47:1 can i use 40 rockers on the 2.9?

thanks for helpin

Why not the whole 4.0?

And I don't understand why everyone thinks swapping to bigger or "performance" injectors will net anything.

Everyone knows that a higher flow injector will run your motor pig rich, which makes you faster because you're in a rush to get to the gas station that much sooner!

For a 4.0 swap wouldn't i have to Change out mounts tyranny transfer case ect.... and Im mainly wondering about rockers and liters and how big i can go without messing stuff up

The 4.0l engine is based of the 2.8/2.9 engine. It will bolt right in. I don't feel like giving details cuz I'm lazy right now but if you search the site you will see literally hundreds of inquiries about the 2.9 to 4.0 swap. Check in the tech library too.

I'd upgrade the heads for sure, the stock ones are crap and they'll crack I can guarentee it.

4.0 swap is super easy, and the best bang for your buck. All yoh need is the engine wiring harness and computer. Plug it in and go. I did a 3.0 to 4.0 with very little frustration. 2.9 to 4.0 is even easier because the tranny and engine mounts are compatable

I read somewhere that you had to convert the dash to an 89-92 dash before you can do the swap. Is this true? I have an 88 Ranger2WD with 2.9 myself and I hate this 2.9 P.O.S

Sry...didn't mean to butt in. Truck just started crapping out again and I'm pissed. Going to start a thread myself lol...

see im wondering tho if my fm 145 tranny flywheel and clutch will bolt up even tho my truck is a 88 it was made dec of 87

The tranny will bolt up but won't live long.

sorry to thread jack, but i hear a lot of guys say this. will a 2.9 5sp hold up behind a 4.go if you use the bigger clutch? haven't found much on here about that particular question

You can upgrade the clutch to a 20" multi disk 2000hp holding space age setup and it still won't do diddly to save the transmission's internals.

so what would be the best way to go about it. if i change the tranny i would have to get a new driveshafts probably and what transmission would hold that bolts up to my stock tranny support bar holes
