Truckspotters

I see this green ranger around town every once in awhile. Pretty sure it’s a second gen from the front, but I’m not super familiar with the differences between the first and second gen.

That looks like Calypso green… first available on the Ranger in ‘92. Last year of the 2nd Gen.

I’m pretty sure 2nd gen has the lexan headlights that are “flush” with the grill.

Hard to tell from the rear, but the fronts are easy. 1st gen all the lights were seperated from each other, 2nd gen the lights got "clustered" together

1st gen has sealed beam old school headlights. Front bumper ends at the fender corner. 2nd gen has plastic light covers and bumper wraps around the corner and ends at the tire.

It’s easy to tell when it’s that color… it’s a ‘92.

I had my 83 Ranger painted a Ford Factory Brown/Gold color that wasn't even available until the 3rd gen.

Saw a couple interesting things the other day, no pics though since I was on the freeway dealing with other idiots...

First was one of those deals where they two a car down to Mexico with another car... both were Scion Xa's... was kinda silly looking with a tiny car flat towing another tiny car... the other was a TDI Jetta with a chrome pipe out the hood with a tractor rain cap... custom license plate "SOOT"

I was scouring the three pull a parts around Atlanta for some items for my junk pile, and I came across this stately gentleman. There is always an array of Rangers and broncos from the early 80s to the end of the original line. I think the reason this one caught my eye was that the right front wheel was a Ford/lincoln/mercury 15 inch turbine mag like I have on the town cars. The other wheel present was a steelie, and two were missing. The turbine wheel was so corroded the surface almost looked fuzzy.

The day ended up being just a day out with Lincoln since I only found a couple of the items I was looking for, but it was nice to just have a day off and check out all the Ranger living (or dying) history.

Did you take those aluminum window vent things?

I’ve only ever seen plastic ones. Pretty neat.

No, didn’t think about it. My 87, the Missing Linc, has them, and I don’t know of anything else they would fit that I’ll be involved in.

i’m trying to remember if they were at the east or south pull apart, both about 30 miles away from me (north is around the corner), but across a lot of traffic. Having said that, if you’re passionate about them, I could probably swing out next week and grab them.

Maybe we should put together a Southeast trail ride, but instead of running through the woods, get all you guys from the rust belt to come down here and do a caravan through all the pull a parts. Even though that bronco was rusty on the surface, it was pretty solid underneath.

What kind of hoarder are you? Pathetic.

I don’t need them, don’t have anything they would fit. Don’t even have vague plans to but something they would fit. I probably would have taken them just because it’s something I’ve never seen before.

And that, folks, is why my wife beats me.

That is to dog gone funny. All my life I have been the exact hoarder you just described. I suspect seven or eight years ago I would’ve grabbed them and much more. When I got so far behind when I was sick and injured, while at that moment I grabbed up a bunch of crazy stuff, when I came out of the fog, realized my frailty and my age, I have been trying really hard not to just grab stuff because I think it’s cool. My problem is I think everything is cool. That’s what happened with that pintle hitch I just got and reworked. I already have a Pintle Hitch that I haven’t used in 10 years but it was just too cool, too good to pass up.

While I was out scrounging, there was a town car of my vintage, which are becoming more and more rare in the scrap yards. I took the grill out, and I started to take the headlight bezels off, and I actually had a rare moment of clarity and said to myself “what the hell do you need more of these for?” And I left them behind. It was a struggle.

It’s also an energy limitation. While searching for my wheel caps, I was also checking out the hitch receivers. I have a project coming up where I could probably use one. Well, when I was looking underneath, there was a pair of tow hooks under the back bumper of a Ranger. They were held on with something like half inch or 5/8 bolts, and the bolts were encrusted rusty. It would have been an effort to take them off and I didn’t have my bigger tools with me. A few years ago, you wouldn’t have been able to stop me. Then I thought about all the hooks I already have in the shed of miracles, although these were the exact ones I wanted, and I decided to let them go. I’m still thinking of going back for them, I could probably buy new ones for the amount of gas. It’s like the old saying, it’s hard to teach an ancient dog moderation.

It truly is a Disease…
