Self explanatory. When I was as young and foolish, we used to do this with a chain until the chain snapped and went through the other guys rear windshield and smashed his dash. If it went a little left, ouch!

Always put weight bags on your chains or winch cables! Seen more than a few fly through tailgates and windows when a couple bags of dirt could have saved the day... or a life...

Synthetic ropes, recovery straps, and soft shackles are the way to go now. Less deadly and less damage if something lets loose. That being said, safety bags are still the way to go.

And don’t get the straps with the metal hooks in them. If you do, you might as well be using a cable or chain.

The big thing is don't use a chain like a snatch strap.

I use chains all the time, but it is kind of a dissimilar thing. A tractor pulling out a truck has more go than a truck pulling out a truck... so the "get a run for it" snatch action isn't needed.

Cables and Synthetic ropes have a lot of rebound. That's the reason to apply a weighted bag. So that it helps dampen and reduce the rebound and direct the cable or rope towards the ground if it fails. Chain has the least rebound because it's a bunch of tiny short pieces that just fall when released.

All those little short pieces flex under a load, they can all be bad news if they break... or if what they are attached to breaks.

Absolutely never use the hitch ball as an anchor point for just that reason.

I posted this because I figured it would get some chatter. I did this a few times when I was a kid with a $135 pick up truck when my brain was the size of a pea.

I’m learning to love you guys, but I’m laughing out loud that all of you seem to think this is absolutely a sensible thing to do and you’re analyzing the best way to do it.

We went "drawbar to drawbar" with tractors all the time as kids. Quickly learned it is more a matter of timing than machine capability.

When we did tractor pulling we pulled the sled via a chain to the pan.

Got lucky enough to get stuck behind this guy for a few miles this morning. Usually when I enter the round about and see someone going slow in the morning I shift to "Sport" in the Ranger and squeeze in front of them, this morning I just cruised behind this man as he was out for his morning (6am) cruise
