For about the past month now there's been a whining noise that seems to be getting worse. It seems to be coming from the alternator area. My power steering fluid levels seem fine. But whiney noise gets a lot worse when I turn the wheels. But it also whines when in neutral and you rev the engine. So it is dependent on engine speed. She acts and drives fine but that whine is really loud. It can be good, so anybody have any knowledge of any shortcomings in the 99 b4000's alternator/power steering sector?

Change your power steering fluid, then rack steering wheel back and forth...stop to stop...several times to see if the noise lessens. If not, get ready to replace the pump...if it does quiet down, you need to do a full fluid flush and refill.

Yeah,^that^. And don't expect the noise to ever really go away completely. The C3 power steering pump is a noisy little fatherless entity. Even when they are brand new they make some noise. It's when they quit making noise that you need to worry. That means the reservoir is completely empty.

^what they said. All of my Rangers and Bronco II's have had a bit of a small noise when turning left or right. Nothing to worry about. My 99 Ranger still has a bit of a noise and it had it sine I bought it new July '99.

^what they said.

If that doesn't fix it, don't let your girlfriend or wife ride in it. That should quiet down most of the noticeable whines.

Lol appreciate the help, it really is quite loud for no apparent reason. It baffled me because it would do it with no rolling or turning of the wheels,. But I'll try what you said and see what helps. Thanks guys

you could hear 80s Fords before you saw them. The Rat uses a little fluid, not enough to replace anything yet. There was steering box seal kit under the seat. The pump only gets noisy when run low. It gets Mercon like a lot of stuff , so there is an open qt in the bed. :D

Vaccuum bleeding can sometimes help reduce the noise (they sell kits at Harbor Freight for pretty cheap — grab a spare reservoir cap from a junkyard and tap it for a bleeder valve). If it doesn’t get better with bleeding you can look into a Jeep Saginaw conversion (proquipped conversion), but it’s more work and money. It really just depends on how much the noise bothers you. Good luck.

The way I see it, if the pump is whining, there are two options.

First, get it some cheese. If that doesn't work, then call it a whaaaaaaaaambulance.

The old timer told me to run motor oil in a ford 30 w. Put in a noisey pinto I had stop a leak and no more noise. joey!
