well i just put a new 2.9l engine in my 88 ranger. i started it up once and it ran nice then once i turned it off and it would not start again.. The truck is turning over but wont start. i checked to see if i was getting gas and i am i checked for spark and i guess im not getting any. so i bought new plugs wires and ignition coil didnt work. distributers new too. idk if anyone could help.

might be the inline fuse near the battery.
or bad relay to the ignition
or bad TFI or ignition module
or a simple broken wire, or missing ground somewhere

how do you check the relays and inline fuses

I'd probably check for voltages with a volt meter to see where power isn't. You might start at the computer relay, the one with the brown plug. If the computer isn't turning on, you will get no spark or fuel as the fuel pump relay depends on the computer relay to work as well as the computer to be sane. A good wiring diagram is a good investment, it will tell you where all of the fuse links/grounds/etc actually are.

+1 to IMenriched - TFI will also cause problems like this, as well as the other things he had mentioned. Search around on a search engine for TFI-IV diagnostics to help determine if the TFI module is causing the problem. But it's recommend that the TFI be checked with someone with the tools to do it - some auto parts stores can do this. It's also been said it helps to heat the module up while testing, but I suspect yours would show up bad cold if it were in fact the problem.

well i know the computer is turning on and i know the fuel pump is too i can hear it. i checked it anyways with a test light and it was good. what relay fuse is the ignition does anyone know?

Sounds like it's either not getting a signal from the distributor pick up or the TFI could be bad. Maybe even some sort of wiring problem. From what you describe, it sounds like you have fuel pressure (tested?) but the injectors are not firing and it's not getting spark. This leads me to think that the computer doesn't know that the engine is turning to ground the injectors and has no signal to work with to control the SPOUT. Maybe pulling codes could provide some insight.

As far as fuses for the ignition, I know the coil power is routed from the batt terminal, and through a few fuse links on the way. Not sure about TFI and other components, don't have wiring diagram handy. Some diagnosis at the TFI relay and some generic diagrams would probably show you the pin out and you'd be able to tell if it was missing power or not (if it was a blown fuse link, etc).
