Hey I have a 94 4.0 4x4 with a M5OD tranny. I ve been having problems with a bad slave cylinder not fully realeasing the clutch so Ive been really ramming the gears together. I just couldnt afford to not be using my truck which is why i didnt fix it. So now it was making a bad grinding noise in gear only for one second then it would go away. It got worse and when it would stop grinding and engage gears it was a hard clunk. Now I put it in any gear and the truck wont move at all. However when I put it in 4LO I can get it going. So is this tranny, t-case, or both? Thanks

probably stripped shift collars/gear dogteeth.

can you get any gears to grab? does reverse work ok? i would assume you've been shutting the engine off to put it into reverse so that would be the least damaged

No none of the gears will grab at this point and reverse doesnt work. The thing is why would it work when it is in 4LO?? I dont think you can just buy new inside parts for this tranny or they are hard to put in. I figure I could get a new tranny/ t case if needed? Do you think the t case is screwed as well?

i would imagine that it will move in 4Low because there is extra gear reduction so the clutch/transmission doesn't have to work as hard.

put it in 4hi. that will tell you if its the trans or transfer case. i doubt the transfer case is messed up.

you aren't very clear.. when you put the trans in gear and release the clutch pedal... you hear a grinding noise and the truck won't move? or you just hear a grinding noise when you try to get it into gear?

in my opinion you probably aren't going to be taking the trans apart to replace any broken parts and the severely worn synchro rings.. so you might as well find a new trans and get a clutch kit. and replace the bad slave cylinder that caused all this

Now it is at the point that I put the truck in gear and it wont move and now it doesnt make a grinding noise anymore (probly rounded of something) So now I guess a trip to the wrecker. Anyone know what trans will work on my truck? Will a 2 wheel drive M5OD work on my truck with my t case? What about a M5OD out of an explorer with an electric T-case? Thanks

should have just changed the slave, could have avoided all the extra $ this will cost now.

as for what tranny will work, No, a 2wd tranny won't work because the tailshafts are different. is your transfer case electric or manual right now? it would be a major PITA to switch to electric. buy if you buy a tranny/elec t case as a combo, you should be able to just swap t cases. and sell the electric one.

Well I found out what was wrong, my t case shifter must have been mis-adjusted because when I took the t case off and turned the shifter with a wrench everything was intact. Before this it was like the t case was always in neutral except when shifted to 4 LO(reason why truck only moved in 4 LO).
So now questions, Im going to do fluid change on tranny/ t case, should I flush them with some kind of solvent?
My truck was always somewhat hard shifting to second and getting into first gear since I bought it. I now suspect it was the slave all along. A new slave should fix this correct?
New shifter bushings will cure the excessive shifter play in gear?

yes a new slave cyl. should fix it, but you might have damaged the synchronizer rings from forcing it into gear all this time.

DON'T use solvent or cleaners to flush the trans. if you want to clean it some just flush it would clean MERCON fluid.

and yes new shifter bushings will make the shifter nice and tight feeling
