Hello everyone I have a 2000 ford ranger 4.0 four by four... I have a problem with the four wheel drive tho... I have a switch for my four wheel drive just to be specific. When I try and pit the truck in 4*4 u hear the trasfer case working but no four by four? I just changed wheel bearings up front a while ago and I'm thinking maybe I missed a step somewhere ? I did not replae the white rings that I broke getting the old bearings off? Could this bey prob ????

Please help mike

Does your front driveshaft turn when its in 4 wheel? If it does then the problem is in your hubs... and not sure which white ring you're talking about, but yeah that kinda sounds like you broke part of your hubs which would definitely do it.

The ring I'm alking about is white and goes around the front axle I believe in front of the bearing..... I just didn't replace them so could it maybe be vaccume? I'm going to check the front drive shaft now an see if it moves

the white ring your talking about is a retainer ring for the axle, if it didn't break when you took it off it should be fine. The vacuum hubs are notorious for going bad. You can pull them off and clean them then put some kind of light lub oil in them and see if they start working. Another thing to look at is the vacuum line that goes in the knuckle and make sure there is no cracks in it

Rings

Yes I broke both of the rings.... Would that effect it locking into 4*4 ? I haven't really drove it since I realized no four wheel d

I had a problem with my transfer case shift motor on my 96. When I would switch it over to 4wd it would click like it was trying to shift then the 4wd and 4wd lo lights would flash on dash. I took apart the motor and cleaned it up. There is an article in the tech section that explains how to do this. Not sure if this holds true for a 2000.

The 2000 ranger recieved a live axle setup like the explorers and newer rangers. The hubs shouldn't be the problem here. Unless you missed a step and didn't put the axles back in....? But i do believe it should be a live axle setup.

usually the hubs arent the problem. its the axle seals. your hubs are enguaged by vacum and with those seals gone all the air seaps threw and your hubs do not click in. thats a common problem that most people overlook
