Hey guys, Ive got a 96 ranger 2.3 5speed and today I was driving home from work and as soon as I pulled in the driveway it quit. Cranked and cranked and cranked. Nothing! Went in the house for 5 minutes, came and tryed again.... STARTED RIGHT UP! Go for a quick drive... same thing, quit, wait about 5 minutes, starts. Did this 4 times and can not for the life of me figure it out. It Quits quick too, not like its running out of gas or nothing..

But help with the issue asap would be AWESOME cause its my only way to work in the morning!!! Thanks to everyone in advance!

check your fuel pressure?
any check engine lights on?
does it have the TFI? idk about the 2.3's.
distributor good?

idk, just tossing some stuff out there..

Most common problems like these are fuel related and they won't throw a code. Try swapping the fuel pump relay with another in the under hood fusebox. Next time it does it listen for the pump to prime up when you hit the key to the on position, should zzzzzt for 2 to 3 seconds. Don't hear the noise, pump isn't working. Sometimes slapping the tank will jumpstart a sticking pump, if this helps replace the pump before it dies completely

i actually had a simmilar problem would cut off on me to and i have the 1987 ranger supercab 2.9 v6 and i would check the connector for the fuel pump that is under the carpet near the passanger floor board should have 2 wires going in one harness and 2 wires out...that harness was really loose on mine so im going to probably either bend the pins a little so they make a better connection or cut the harness off and connect the wires straight together

Thanks guys, but its not the fuel pump. Its fairly new, only about 3 months old and It can be clearly heard even when the truck wont start.

But a little update, it started working great again, for about 2 days. Then yesterday I was heading to look at an old 78 chev when she decided to quit on me... Did the same thing over and over. So I left it there fir the night, went over about an hour ago and drove it home, worked fine. I still dont trust it though, I belive its loosing fire somehow.

Mine did this too it was the fuel filter. Try disconnecting the maf if that doesn't work I guess. But sounds like fuel filter or pump it was a filter in my case

I know we are all leaning towards fuel pump or filter but next time it does it yank off a plug wire and check for spark. Keep us informed.
