I just had the motor Replaced in my 97 Ranger. Reverse has no issues but when I put it in drive it wants to stall whenever I press on the gas. Could this be a ECM issue?

Have you checked for vacuum leaks?

quick and cheap test

load the engine in reverse.
while in reverse get it up to mid revs, 3000 or whatever, then apply the brakes to load it down.
try to do it on jackstands for safety considerations.
what happens?

how about using drive while on the jackstands. try it free spinning and with brakes.

Try putting it in 2 instead of D and see if it still stalls

There is a DTR(digital transmission range) sensor on drivers side of transmission
This "tells" the computer what "gear" the transmission is in
In Park or neutral the idle is lower
When you shift into a "gear" the computer should bump up the idle by 50-100 rpms because of the load
If DTR is out of adjustment then when in D computer might not see that as "in gear" so engine stalls
Simple test, don't go adjusting anything yet, lol
