took my 94 ranger 4x4 out to the a pit and was getting muddy when it started to idle very high now when i am on the road and push in my clutch it sticks and idles at 4000 rpm but when i get under the dash and jiggle the throttle cable it stops and idles fine untill the next time i gas it. any one knows whats up? i have checked the throttle cable on top of the block and all looks fine but i dont know what else it could be besides the throttle cable??????????help please

Did the connection at the cable and the throttle body get gunked up and cause it stick?

By the way, where in Florida were you mudding?

after i read this i went out and looked and it doesnt looked gunked up
and i live near tampa and it was a small pit me and a buddy of mine kinda just stumbled apon in the woods behind new tampa

Alright I'm a little confused. You say that it starts idling high at around 4,000 rpms until you mess with the throttle cable itself under the hood? Is the gas pedal itself in the cab sticking or is the throttle plate closed and it still idles really high?

no i mess with the pedal in the car i reach above the pedal and pull on the cable right at the fire wall but as for under the hood the throttle cable looks normal as far as i can tell but i have a pretty basic knowledge of auto mechanics

and as for the idling it only happens when i floor it, thenit will shoot up to around 4 thousand rpms, so i play with the throttle so it goes back to normal so i know that some where along the cable is getting held in place and then adding that to the clutch is makeing it idle high i am almost positive it is the throttle cable i just dont know where it is either kinked or gunked up or something

i just went out and ran my fingeres along the cable behind the pedal and it doesnt feel frayed or kinked it all feels normal do you think there could be some thing cought in the cable houseing some where? thats like holding the cable in place?

Ya it's possible. I had that happen on a lawnmower once. Cable completely seized up inside the housing. If the engine is off and you press the pedal down does the cable still stick? If it does see if you can maybe hear a place with it's causing too much friction. You may to replace the cable altogether. Either that or the spring on the throttle body that returns the cable to its original position is worn out.
